Hello again

Hello Spark Friends! I am finally able to be in touch again as we now have internet after being here almost three months and being in our permanent home now for two months. I am happy to be back online. I look forward to catching up with my good friends. :-)

As far as how I am ...I really don't know where to start. We arrived in December and had the month to do a bunch of running around, finding a place to live, getting the essentials and getting the kids situated in school. To my great relief, a wonderful school has recently opened up not too far from where we live and both kids were accepted. (We had a disappointing and high stress episode with a different school that accepted only one child but not the other.) Anyway, this school is soooo much better for us since it is new and all the kids are either new to Dubai or new to the school so it has been fairly easy for Quin and Liam to fit in. Liam and I have been working hard at reading and writing English. At first there was a great amount of sobbing at the kitchen table because it was soooooo hard but once I got over myself everything got better. (Joke...that was a joke...Liam sobbed at the kitchen table...I sobbed in private.) Now he is on his way though his favourite subject in school being Arabic. He told us the other day that he couldn't believe he has gone his whole life not realising that some languages had alphabets that did not look like the A, B, C's. Can you imagine getting all the way to age six and not knowing that?!? :-D

Dubai is really different but we really do like it here. The pace is in many ways pretty fast but in someways things move really slow...like the whole internet thing. I am really glad we came though. I think that it is good for all of us. Patrick works really hard but he loves it. I have been a bit unsettled because our things took over two months to get here and although we had furniture, without my "stuff" I felt unprepared to do things like throw parties for the kids birthdays. We opted instead to have a weekend at a hotel on the beach and let other people take care of the festivities. It was pretty nice. We swam and relaxed and the wonderful staff arranged for cake and balloons both Quin and Liam's birthdays.

They enjoyed the robes as well as the pool.

We have had some interesting weather here. In January it rained for a couple of days. The amount of rain, to me, seemed insignificant at first but I quickly learned that even a tiny bit of rain here causes a lot of flooding and confusion. It took the kids three hours to get to school on their bus! They loved it. It was a big adventure. Patrick did not love it so much as it also took him over three hours to get to work. We live out in the sand away from the city you see, and there is no real overpasses to use to get across the highways...only underpasses and when it rains they fill up fast! It was all very exciting...and messy.

This past month we experienced a high wind sand storm. Another very messy kind of storm. Sand covered everything and wind blew it all around. Here is a picture of our car which was parked INSIDE a parking garage.

The sand is so fine it has a sneaky way of getting inside the house even with the windows and doors shut. Crazy. I also learned that it is not a good idea to eat cauliflower that has been harvested after a sand storm. (a little gritty in the teeth)

Anyway...we are here...we are healthy and happy and constantly amazed at everything Dubai. It is a truly remarkable place! I will sign off now with a few more pics of the kids in the area that we live. (Oh! Right! I cut off all my hair and had it dyed blond...a little closer to my now natural colour. My hair is now so darn grey that as it grows out it is far less noticeable then when I grow it out from dying it dark brown.)

I thought that was you in the pic of Liam! You look fabulous! Very nice to hear how you're doing (10 days after you posted) and that you all like it Children soak up information like sponges, especially languages. Super glad that he adjusted so quickly and is eager to learn more.

    Hi, Ronna !

It's so wonderful to see you blogging again. You've been missed !!! I'm glad that you're settling into Dubai. Must be a big culture shock from Norway, but it sounds like everything is working out for you and the family.

Your kids are going to be multilingual, how awesome is that ?!

Looking forward to hearing more from you and life in Dubai.
