Olive. Oh my sweet Olive!
Complete freak accident 4 weeks ago when she yelled out in pain while playing on the floor with her ball (???). We wouldn't have believed so much damage could happen had we not seen it for ourselves.
Something was very wrong. Olive was in massive pain and couldn't move.
Randy took her to vet ER that night. The next morning more doctors, an MRI and a trip to a puppy neurologist (amazing!). Olive had ruptured a disc and needed emergency surgery. She's only 3 1/2. We were so scared for her. She's too young for this nonsense!
She stayed in the animal hospital for a couple of days and then we were given strict orders: Olive was not allowed to walk at all for 4+ weeks. Had to stay in her crate 24/7 and we had to carry her to and from potty breaks.
She needs physical therapy daily, ice and heat packs 3x daily, and lots of pills. Strangely, she is taking some of the same meds I take for my EM (oh no!).
Can a dog be depressed? Absolutely. She just cries and gives the saddest puppy eyes ever. We are not allowed to hold her. I think that part is the worst.
We have had to force feed her water for 2 weeks, and she didn't want to eat at first. Thank you SO much to those who suggested a few tricks to help (MAMADWARF you're my hero right now!).
The busy post-op schedule of our furry kid has been taking a huge toll on my body. I'm just not able to pick up 24 lb snoring bowling ball numerous times a day for potty breaks, barf duty, water syringe, yadda yadda. But I don't really care about my disease screaming and flinging extra pain my way right now since I just want Olive to heal (yes yes yes!).
So now we wait to see the end results of Olive's surgery. She might not be able to use her hind legs when all the dust has settles. Might need one of those doggy wheelchair doo-dads. Ooooooh I hope she recovers well.
She did sit up on her own a few days ago, which was grrrrrreat. Yes, she toppled over soon after, but STILL, we were happy!
So I continue to pray for my wonder pup Olive. And I sincerely thank those of you who are doing the same for her (what a blessing!).
I am reading this now and realize I might sound like and obsessed pet owner. And well, I guess I am, so I will wear that badge proudly : ).
Keep y'all posted.
'Nuff said for now,
