a breath of spring--daylily babies

good morning! I don't know what the temp. is here, but I think its safe to say that the inside of my freezer would be warmer. the roads are clear and there isn't any wind, so driving is safer that it has been the last few days. we were supposed to meet my little brother for dinner last night, but he called to say since he was stuck on the highway in a whiteout that we probably should cancel.
so I thought if ever there was a morning to see the hope of spring today would be it--so here you go:
this is a view of daylily babies sprouting in my plant room. its warm in there, and kind of humid. smells like damp earth, and the light is very strong and bright. this is the first group of seeds I started--they have been popping up over the last week or so. the second round is planted and sitting over the heat cable. when they sprout they will move under the lights. I have a third group of crosses pulled that I need to go through again and decide what to plant. I have so many seeds I can't plant them all, so I have to be discriminating. daylily hybridizing is very simple to do, and extremely addictive (who wouldn't want to "make" their very own personal daylily varieties???) and you always have more seeds than you can start. sometimes I sell some on the lily auction, and I have been toying with that idea. I don't grow the real expensive "collectors" plants, so my seeds don't fetch very high prices. but I do breed for a narrow niche that most people don't--late season flowering. so I have a few people that are interested in that.
three slates done--I wish they photographed better--will try to take some pics next week. they always develop a glare when I try to snap pix of them, and it makes them hard to see. anyway--have the concept decided on for the next one--not anything new and different--but a subject that always sells--a cardinal pair and apple blossoms.
think I will stop by the kitchen store today too--been missing Phyllis. have a great day!
