One Of the Best Ways To Stay Warm...

Sunday, February 15, 2015

Despite the brilliantly tempting sunlight beckoning to get out and play, today is just NOT one of those days due to brutally cold temps and winds. We're at a HIGH of ZERO (F) today!

So, hunkering down snugly at home, keeping way busy with a mega-major-cookathon. Keeps the house warmer, right?

Yep! But here's what's keeping me even warmer today: My quads are giving me a two-thumbs-up-big-smile-sorene
ss reminding me of the truly wonderful afternoon I had yesterday cross country skiing with others.

It was a grey, overcast sky heavy with the falling snow as we made our way along what used to be a canal tow-path at our local state park. While it was no blizzard, the snow was steady as we went along on a very tame (THANK YOU!), level path which was already nicely groomed by prior skiers. A magical winterland! And the spell was not even broken by the three tame tumbles yours truly had along the way.

Others were very tolerant of my newbie baby-steps...didn't have the confidence to take longer strides and have to admit to not getting my "glide stride" just yet.

Although the trail was "groomed" it wasn't as well packed as my weight wanted it to be, so there were frequent tipsy moments when my skis would suddenly shift side to side and throw my balance off. Rather than fight a tumble, I just went with it, figuring any "fight" I might put up would only likely twist or tug in harmful ways. So my tumbles were harmless lessons in how to get up with skis on. :-)

Yesterday was a balmy 20 degrees and I was so pleased that my choice of clothes was PERFECT! My full-length bike tights did excellent double duty as I hoped they would: keeping me warm enough without the clunkiness of jeans or sweats. Plus the slickness of lycra (MOI, saying something NICE about LYCRA?) kept the snow from my tumbles from sticking to me and getting me all wet. Everything just brushed off nicely and I was on my way. Along with the black bike tights I wore a bright red long-sleeved t-shirt as a nod to the holiday and a light gray fleece zippered jacket over this so I could unzip as needed to let out the "steam" of the workout :-)

So today I can lose myself in yesterday's memories of soaking up the great outdoors with wonderful company and be even more warm than I am from all the cooking and KP duty!

This whole week ahead is looking pretty brutal from here on out with below zero temps for at least 4 nights ahead. We're @ minus 7 already at 8 pm, heading for -11 by morning...double UGH!

BUT! I am prepared and forearmed with memories of yesterday...

Cheers to all for another Spark-filled week ahead!

Don

PS...thx for all the visits to my last blog & apologies for not having gotten around individually to let you know how much I truly appreciate your ongoing support!

My xc ski yesterday was best of the season-- gorgeous -4C weather with sparkling sunshine and perfect kick/glide. just zooming along!! Plus I could hear chickadees which were trying out "Sweet Spring" calls in exchange for the usual "chick-a-dee-dee-dees"!

    Lovely.

My curried pumpkin coconut soup (made on the weekend, natch) was delish for supper!!

Cross country skiing?? Wowsers, something I've never tried. Not that there's much chance here in London!! Sounds great though.
Loved the comment about lycra. Spent Sunday looking at numerous lycra clad butts as I trailed the field on a half marathon. So unflattering but soooo comfy!
    Have a great week

Its always wonderful to try something new, and better with friends!
Its been a long while since I have been able to go outside to enjoy any winter activity, so quite envying you! The trails here are good and safe to hike again so now all I need is to find the free time!! Our weather is -4, with higher windchills, heading down, but at least its sunny and most people have cleaned up after the blizzard.
    Happy channeling your inner chef!
PS. Thanks for those always interesting links you provide on the friend feed!

I remember years ago when I tried XX skiing. Your blog has brought back all of the memories for me. I spend more time on the ground than I did upright! Now with 2 artificial hips I am afraid of falling so skiing is out for me. BUT I have been thinking about Snow Shoeing and just need the opportunity for someone to show me the ropes.

Good for you trying something new which embraces the winter months we just can't avoid given the areas we live in.

I like the cross country motion in the pool but that's as far as I'm ever going to go to do cross country skiiing. I'm a total weather weanie now that I've lived in a semi-tropical weather system for 4 years. Brrrrrr.

Brrrrr! Cross-country skiing is a fun kind of total body workout, isn't it. There's something satisfying and nurturing about physical exertion in the beautiful outdoors. Glad you got a chance to enjoy it.

Nothing better than big batch cooking to warm up the kitchen! And makes the week easier too.

Yes, with the wind and the zero or below temps today here, not good to spend too much time out there.

Stat warm, Don. We were bitterly cold here, too, especially yesterday with the horrendous wind chills.

Cross country skiing is something I have yet to try. My few attempts at a machine weren't pretty... but one day... so many possibilities... so little lifetime?

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it! You have the right terrain for it! emoticon
