Do It Because You CAN.

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

I want to share a Facebook post from a friend of mine. The concept is simply this...choose to live a healthy lifestyle, because you CAN. If you have been blessed with a functioning and mobile body, give thanks by MOVING IT. If the choice of living a healthy lifestyle is in your hands take advantage of that ability. The next time you're searching for motivation know that there are people who don't have a choice about their health or fitness, but you do. Take advantage of it.

I used to run in the mornings a lot before work but got out of the habit because I get lazy when it's dark and cold. I used to see a man probably 70+ years old each morning who was always out there even though his walk was nothing more than a slow, pained-looking hobble. He seems like once upon a time he was a runner. We always gave each other the "runner's wave," which is basically just sticking your arm out to the side and letting it linger there for a few seconds.

I finally had to bite the bullet this morning and get up early to run because the heat is ramping up (too soon, Phoenix, too soon). And sure enough, there he was. But wow, he was power walking at a pretty good clip. He really had his arms swinging. He still looked pained but also very determined. I saw a light in his face that I'd never seen before. I'm not sure what had happened to him. Maybe rehabbing a hip replacement? We excitedly waved at each other and I was glad to finally see him smile. Wow, did he ever inspire me today!

It reminded me of how blessed I am that I can run and move. The human body is meant to move and can handle so much more than we realize or expect. There are plenty of people who wish they could run or even walk for that matter. Don't take for granted your God-given gifts of functioning legs, a beating heart, and lungs that yearn to feel the burn of good old fashioned fresh air. Wasting these gifts doesn't seem right, especially when I look at a man's face and see it so full of pain yet so full of life to be out there cruising down the road. So I guess what I'm trying to say is this: thank the Lord and your lucky stars that you can move! Please go out into the world and make it happen. Run, walk, bike, crawl--whatever you can--for those who can't. *drops mic*
