Winter Carnival - Lighted Man
Monday, February 09, 2015
I missed Winter Carnival (it conflicted with 2-yr-old grandson's birthday), but glad to see our traditions go on! We do a fireworks show during winter carnival that includes "The Lighted Man". Not only does his suit, helmet and ski poles include LED lights - he carries Roman candles in his backpack that shoot off as he skis down Howelsen Hill. Matt Stensland caught a great photo of The Lighted Man coming down Howelsen before his Roman candles started going off.
Jon Banks, also known as The Lighted Man, traveled from his home in Utah to a museum in Denver to pick up his suit before he skied down Howelsen with fireworks shooting out of his back; his family has carried on the Lighted Man tradition since his father was the first Lighted Man in 1936.
I was actually in the crowd the year The Lighted Man took a spill, sending people scattering as Roman candles shot horizontally until he could get righted.....
