Yampa River thru Steamboat Springs - 2-1-15

Sunday, February 01, 2015

The 250-mile-long Yampa River begins about 30 miles south of Steamboat Springs and flows directly through town before making a turn to the west and (ultimately) the Colorado River. This time of year you can often find ice from each bank straining to meet in the middle.

The Yampa through town usually stays open for hardy fly-fishermen due to the hot springs that dump into it at a couple different locations. Cambria Remillard framed this photo (close to my neighborhood!) with the ski slopes of Mt. Werner in the background.

Thank you so much for showing us this beautiful photo, of the beginnings of the Colorado River. I saw the Inns River (Innsbruck) when it was a babbling, turquoise stream, at the top of a Swiss Alp, much like this Yampa looks like, and again, when we were in Innsbruck, Austria, where it was huge, and not so clear. emoticon emoticon
