Another way to walk with a friend

Monday, January 26, 2015

I have been wearing a fitbit for nearly three years now. I have worked towards 10000 steps a day for a long time...and make it nearly every day. My streaks are more likely to be broken by my forgetting to log in than my not making the steps...even when I traveled last y ear, I did laps in the waiting areas of airports and in the parking lot of the resort we visited!

At home, though, it can get a bit boring to trek the same route up and down my driveway. One full lap is approx 1000 steps. For the last few months (I can't recall when I started) I began calling a shut in friend when I head out the door to get my steps in. She craves the conversation and I don't particularly love being on the phone, but by calling Mac, I have found my steps seem easier to do since my mind is occupied. Mac gets a good visit and I get my steps...or a good chunk of them done. I can't walk the full length of the driveway with my house phone, so sometimes I do circles where we park or walk half the length of the drive...whatever the case, it works.

NOW I have an added incentive. Mac is trying to get up out of her chair or wheel chair and walk or stand for at least a little while as we are talking...I have tried to encourage her to move as much as she can each day and gradually she IS becoming more active and more mobile. So, now we "walk" phone! emoticon

What a great idea. I too wear a Fitbit and compete with DS#1 for steps, many of which I get while pacing when I get a phone call. Like the idea of deliberately calling someone who needs the conversation.

I think its wonderful that you get to do things at the same time, both being beneficial to both of you and Mac gets the added benefit of your company. Great work.

I sure like this story Asta. Maybe by summer she will be so mobile you will have to buy her a fitbit and you can walk truly walk together. Healing prayer for your friend. MA

So great Asta! You are both reaping the benefits. Such an inventive way to keep it from getting so boring going up and down your driveway. emoticon

Very cool story! I definitely find exercise, including walking, a lot easier, when my mind is distracted. I also walk faster when I'm talking on the phone-an added benefit during the winter when I'm walking to my car (I park 1 mile away from work).

I love this! Go you for getting your steps in (I paced my bedroom last night to tick up those last few steps so I could hit 10,000 before climbing into bed) and congratulations on helping your friend take her first step!
