Band on Skis - 1-25-15

Sunday, January 25, 2015

For the past 102 years, Steamboat Springs has celebrated Winter Carnival. Since 1935 one of the unique things this has included is the "World's First Ski Band" - our high school band marching on telemark-style skis while playing their instruments.

Tread of the Pioneers, our local museum, had this photo of the ski band taken in the 1950's. Performing on skis is not the biggest challenge the band members face - it's the cold.

I'm a little bummed I'll miss this February tradition because I'll be out of town celebrating a two-year-old grandson's birthday. Believe it or not, the marching band on skis is NOT the craziest thing we do for Winter Carnival...

I love your town, that's so cool! So many exciting things to do from the sounds of it.

Just think, you may be out of town, but remember who you'll be out of town for, and he's well worth it! :)

I'd love to see that Marching-Ski-Band too; how awesome is that! When I lived 500 miles north of Toronto in N. Ontario for eight years, the towns up there were all very much involved in winter activities that would life the spirits and help with the Cabin Fever associated with the long, very cold months. Always something going on indoors as well as out. emoticon emoticon emoticon

My daughter is a part of a college marching band. I wouldn't want to see her on ski's, that'd be a disaster.
