Catching Up with Local Sparkers

Saturday, January 17, 2015

We've had some interest among our local SparkTeam members in catching up for a walk so I set up a meet 'n greet for today...however back when I set it up the weather was calling for mid-20's.

Instead we only had 11 degrees...brrr! So our ranks got whittled down a tad: only myself and STRIVERONE, who I know also from our local bike club and rides together. He had just finished a 10K in even colder temps. I wasn't aware of this but our local running club (of which he's a member) has January Freeze runs every Saturday in January. It was cool to see so many out there running!

Even outside of the park there were many folks out walking and jogging...what was the big draw?

SUN!! Glorious SUNSHINE!! Everyone was soaking up those rays! I had been to the fitness center earlier for some upper body strength training and an hour of Spinning. So why not toss a 5K walk in the hopper too? I hauled out the Nordic Poles to take along and was sorry to see that there really was enough snow to have coulda/shoulda/woulda done some cross country skiing. It'll all disappear tomorrow when the temps shoot up into the mid 30's...sigh. Can't do EVERYTHING! The cold got a bit intense on my face toward the end of the walk...the rest of me was toasty warm...but I found myself having a little difficulty enunciating my speech with cheeks & lips feeling like they were getting stiff with the cold.

Both STRIVERONE and I are hoping for warmer temperatures soon so we can tempt more local Sparkers to come on out and join in the fun and conversation...!

Spent time later in the afternoon / evening doing some big batch cooking (soups, etc.) to be ready for the week ahead.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

The only spark members in my area are ones I invited to spark and they don't even track or anything...I think they joined just so I could get points. But I have other acquaintances who ask for my advice and root me on as I root them on!

Good on you organizing a get together! You and Vinny are sure tough dudes! Sunshine does indeed make it all feel better! We are in the mid 20's here. Its only the wind that gives us the troubles. They were talking about frostbite and frozen corneas when we get our extreme cold temperatures -you can protect your face, but a little hard to cover the eyes. But I had to go out in it anyway to fulfill my bridge club commitments -thankful for the invention of the enveloping Eskimo Parka!
I hope you get more participation next time and warmer temperatures! I know I would have been joining you if I had lived near there!

Sunshine does help the cold be more tolerable, and pleasant company helps a lot too. Glad you got a good walk in. The sun in coming in my East window (next to my computer) right now, so I know I want to get out and soak up some Vitamin D!

That sounds very fun despite the cold. Meeting fellow Sparkers is great! Good job on the batch cooking. I am going to do that also.

Sounds like fun, though SO cold....here too, but I also LOVE those days when the sun is out! It amazes me how cold the temp can be but the sun can still WARM up the house and melt some snow!

Stay warm and you are so inspiring to go out even when it's that hard to talk because of frozen features! emoticon

Hey, I KNOW how rare SUNSHINE is up your way! And I have to say, I was glad to see I'm not the only one who has the issue with "a little difficulty enunciating my speech" when I'm out being active in cold temperatures. No problems here yesterday as it didn't even freeze overnight before our Saturday sunrise run... we're having a January thaw... so that's what's coming YOUR way, I hope.
