DAY 15: Through the years Thursday: Hilton Head Metabolism Diet
Thursday, January 15, 2015
I have been at this weight loss-weight gain-weight loss game for a long time now. I think that I will try to reflect on some of the things I have tried and what has stuck on Thursdays. One of the first diet books that I can remember using is the Hilton Head Metabolism Diet by Peter Miller which was published in 1986. I think my mother had purchased the book because it was popular in South Carolina where I grew up. This is a very low calorie diet plan with the goal of stoking your metabolism by eating frequent small meals and then exercising (like walking) soon after eating. I am sure that I lost weight on this diet but I did not keep it off. One of the main things I learned from following this plan was how to make my own cocktail sauce using ketchup and horseradish. Not a great endorsement for the diet but it did give me the idea of making things from "scratch." I grew up in a household of mostly packaged meals so this was a new idea to me at the time. The other recipe from the book that I still eat today is for a spinach salad: baby spinach, cottage cheese (sweetened with artificial sweetener), cut up fruit like strawberries, grapes, apples, and oranges. Hard to believe I have been working on the weight loss for so long!
