DAY 14: Small Routines: The Dishwasher

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

Today I am thinking about the many small routines that help keep my life in order. I got the term routines and ideas for many of my routines from the FlyLady and I highly recommend her program. The most basic routine to keep the house functional is to load and run the dishwasher every evening. I load up the dishes after dinner and can usually fit everything for the day in. I wash oversize items by hand. Then I run it on a short cycle, which takes about 15 minutes. When it is finished I open it up and pull the racks out to dry overnight. In the morning as I am supervising everyone's breakfast, I unload the dishes and put them away. Also I try to get the breakfast dishes back into the dishwasher. It sounds completely trivial as I write it down, but keeping this cycle up each day keeps the kitchen in check. Even if the dishwasher is not 100% full, I go ahead and run it because I will always have room for dinner dishes which keeps the dishes from piling up. On weekends I sometimes run the dishwasher right after lunch and again after dinner. It just depends on the day. If you are trying to get your household duties under control, this routine or some adaptation of it might be a good first step.

One problem I have is that there is very little structure to our lives any more. No kids at home. Hubby is disabled and cannot work any more. I do not have an outside job because he often needs a lot of care. Lots of doctor appointments and medical emergencies . . . not very predictable. And I often have health problems myself. So most of the routines have gone out the window. That is one reason I want to be more consistent about exercise. That is one thing that could become a routine, at least most days. When the kids were young, I did have lots of routines, mainly because I was forced to, just to cope with life. I haven't figured out how to maintain that without the pressure of a tight schedule.
