Small Changes Challenge - Day 8
Friday, January 09, 2015
So yesterday’s challenge was 'Think Your Drink' - to drink only water or non-sweetened beverages. I’m constantly aware of how bad I am at that – I really struggle to get my water quota in and I drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee a day with honey. I also drink a small amount of fruit juice most days and far more wine than I should on some days although I do have several alcohol free days every week. I was dreading this day – partly because I had a long-standing dinner invitation which always involves wine with these particular friends.
What I thought was that as I had committed myself to this challenge, which had already proved very useful for my various bad habits it would be pretty wimpy to let this calorie-free drink day go by the board. SO – I mixed up a jug of water with mint and cucumber for the fridge, and a pot of lemon and ginger tea with added cubes of lemon and ginger. I drank the mint/cucumber water instead of fruit juice and microwaved mugfuls of tea when I would normally have drunk coffee. I also texted all the dinner guests, asking them to keep an eye on me at the table and turned up at the party with bottles of sparkling water and more lemon and stuck to my guns. Amazing – trust me!
My ‘nightcap’, once home, was camomile tea. None of my friends could believe it and neither could I but they respected me for trying – and indeed succeeding. Better than that - I respected myself.
Now the plans are laid I can see that there is no reason not to continue with them – not as strictly perhaps, but I am hoping to have taken another small step forward.
