DAY 5: Getting Ready to Travel

Monday, January 05, 2015

I have a long trip on Thursday with my three daughters. We are flying from Athens, Greece to St. Louis, Missouri. My husband is staying a little longer. We make this trip twice a year: in the summer (June-August) and for the winter holidays (usually about 10 days). It is my husband that has the connection to Greece and I will admit to not being the most excited about making the trip, especially in the winter. In winter it is so much harder to get over the jet lag as the days are short and often dreary. There are many aspects of this part of my life that I could go over, but right now I am thinking about how to get my exercise in during the plane trip.

Moving around the airport gives me a good opportunity for walking. I have a goal of 10,000 steps a day which I like to hit even when traveling (much harder for car travel days). In addition to walking through the terminal, I do try to get up and walk while on the plane. I try to get an aisle seat and I make a point to walk to the bathroom at least once on a short flight and several times on the flight across the Atlantic. Sometimes I go stand in line whenever I see a line forming for the bathroom because this gives me a "cover" for standing in the back of the plane marching in place.

I will also take a resistance band with me. I completely forgot to pack one on the trip over this time so it is already laid out for Thursday! I use them mostly for arm exercises while in the terminal. I am somewhat self conscious about using it out in public, so I make a goal like 10 sets of something with 10 reps each to make myself focus. I also try a set of 10 squats whenever I am in the bathroom.

That's what is on my mind today. I do think the blog is helping me process different things. Thanks for reading.

These are great ideas! Finding ways to exercise on the plane also helps prevent some serious health problems. You are an inspiration to me. I think I will get out the resistance bands tomorrow. (Don't want to do that right before bed!)
