Relocating my Spark

Sunday, January 04, 2015

Yes, Sparkfriends, I've been around Sparkworld, but doing more lurking than posting these days.

Like many of you, I've thoughtfully reviewed 2014 to see what I did right BUT even more importantly I'm looking ahead to 2015 to set new goals. I've been reading lots of blogs which have helped me gather information to make the necessary course correction in my own journey.

What did I do right in 2014? NOT gain more weight than I did! emoticon

What I did wrong was to let external events determine what and how much I would eat. (In other words, emotional eating and being away from my home environment where I can easily control food and exercise.)

Like most of us, I had some knocks in 2014. I mean, that's life, right?

*My mother was diagnosed with incurable, inoperable lung cancer in May, just one year after my father passed away. (She is doing OK now but will have another scan in February to determine if the tumor is growing.)

*We took a 3-month trip in our trailer from May-July. Even in a trailer with a tiny kitchen, things are different: more hiking but no strength training, travel days with no exercise at all, more eating out, more packaged foods.

* In August I fell off an 8-foot ladder onto concrete which sidelined any exercise for nearly two months while I healed and underwent PT.

*In Oct/Nov we took a month-long trip to Nepal and India which was wicked fun, but still stressful! I was not in control of most of the meals we had, although breakfast was always a buffet and I usually made good choices.

*December saw a trip home to Michigan where we ate out 14 times in 10 days visiting family and friends.

So...was it acceptable to gain 10 pounds because of these curveballs? No, it is not, but there it is! And here I am!

My main goal in 2015 is to lose the 10 pounds, maybe a few more, but more importantly, learn to make my peace with food! Learn it's NEVER all-or-nothing. I can't sustain the mindset that I'm either 100% on my plan or I'm entitled to be 100% off. I want to learn to manage eating when I'm away from home and/or not in control of the food.

TINAJANE wrote a great blog about this yesterday, as she celebrates her THIRD year of holiday maintenance of a 100+ pound weight loss. Check it out:

Her blogs are always very insightful and if you aren't familiar with her I recommend you pop over there to read some of her popular blogs and check out her page.

So what am I doing, in January 2015 to work towards my goals? I'm on a Sparkteam, doing SparkCoach, and reading my Beck cards daily. I'll plan to get back to the Beck book but now I'm focusing on other resources. I've subscribed to some excellent blogs that emphasize the mind-body connection, and I think these will really help me stay focused and keep my head in the game.

So that's where I am, Sparkfriends! I'll keep you updated as to what I am learning and how I'm doing. Wishing you all a wonderful Sunday!

Wow , Nanette! What a busy and stressful year. Can you imagine what would have happened if you didn't have what you had in place. 2015 will bring more challenges and all we can do is be prepared for them,

Each day is a new day to start again! You have a great plan in place! Sometimes life happens and things don't go quite as we planned but SP has taught us well and we just hop right back on the wagon again!

Yup, moderation is key for sustainability -- instead of "all or nothing".

You've had a pretty tough year and like you say, deserve credit for holding weight at bay where you did!!

All best as we travel forward together in 2015!

Life surely is full of ups and downs and we women need to learn to get through all of it in healthy and self-nurturing ways.

Great blog. Thanks for your honesty. Yes, this has been another year of challenges and ups and downs! That's life, as I know it. But, the learning and growing has been immense.
I love TinaJane too. The only thing I would say about her wonderful blog is that the word "survive" is a word I try not to use any more. I don't want to be just surviving any more. I prefer to take on life's challenges and "thrive" through them. It's semantics, I know, but words have taken on a more important meaning in my self talk these past few years.
God bless you! Happy New Year. You are always an inspiration to me!!!

Awesome blog! "I can't sustain the mindset that I'm either 100% on my plan or I'm entitled to be 100% off. I want to learn to manage eating when I'm away from home and/or not in control of the food." We are SO on the same page! emoticon There needs to be an emoticon that says "We WILL do it!!!" emoticon
