Finding the "New Normal"

2014 threw alot of curveballs at me.
It felt like the whole family was constantly sick from January to April. In the first week of May, my hubby lost his job. A week later, my six year old fell and fractured his elbow and displaced it-requiring surgery for 2 pins to be put in and a cast on from his armpit to his knuckles. Lots of hospital appointments for the next few months, as my little one had nerve damage in his hand and that takes a long time to heal.
Hubby picked up a minimum wage, crummy hours, part-time job for July and then moved on to a different job altogether in August because it was full-time, local and pays slighter better. However HUGE changes-my guy used to wear a suit or dress clothes everyday (corporate world) and now he works with metal and machinery and wears black everyday because his clothes get flilthy. I am so proud of my guy...he really hates change and has worked hard to adapt in order to take care of his family. I work 3 part-time jobs, so that I can work around my son's schedule, as I like to take him to and from school everyday.
In November, my Dad was admitted to hospital on the 11th and passed away on the 20th. Everything happened way too fast. I was his Power of Attorney for health and I did my best to see that his wishes regarding treatment were met. My Dad was my Mom's caregiver, so that has made things pretty challenging, as we have had to arrange for caregivers for her. I have a brother who lives with Mom, but he's not really equipped to deal with the changes, which results in constant phone calls and emails. Luckily (I think??) I live close to my Mom and I see her at least twice a week and I wash and set her hair and do her laundry. It's a balancing act to juggle taking care of my Mom and that situation, while still taking care of my own family (I should maybe say here that I am the only one in my family with a young child).

Anyway sleep has been a big issue for me...as I have trouble finding it. On the pro side-as of September, I had lost 20 pounds and as of now I have gained back 3. My 19 year old nephew told me "That's not a gain, that's water fluctuation. It's a gain when you get to 5 pounds". My plan is to not get to 5 pounds in the wrong direction! I started walking again today (3 miles) and I know that I need to take care of me, especially if I'm going to do my best to take care of everyone else.

I wish everyone a happy, healthy and successful New Year and I hope that we can find the "new normal" that will bring us strength to work towards our goals.

    Wow - those are huge changes in your life...but I didn't need to tell you that.

    Let's make 2015 the year that we squeeze ourselves into everyone else's busy schedules. To take care of others (which you obviously do), we must first take care of ourselves. That means we get "selfish" about spending time exercising.

    We will and can do it this year. The "new" normal isn't always welcome (the parent caretaker thing is so hard), but we just have to have faith that we'll get through it.

    Hang in there. It is going to be a great year for our health!
