Bountiful Baskets!

Monday, December 29, 2014

Several years ago I participated in a food co-op program called bountiful baskets. I can't even remember why I stopped, I think I couldn't afford to do it for a couple of weeks and then I just never went back. Anyway. . . I just created a new account and I am so excited. In a nutshell, this is how it works...
Each week you make a contribution to the CO-op. It's $15 (or $25 for organic). The ladies that run the program take the money and buy what ever produce is in season. They buy it in bulk so they save a bundle of money. Then the produce is divided evenly among the participants. For a $15 contribution I will receive approximately $50 worth of produce. About half of it is fruit and half of it is veggies. It makes it so much easier to eat my fruits and veggies! It is always what is in season and the produce has always been in great condition. It also gives me the opportunity to try produce items that I might not normally buy. I won't know what is in the baskets until I get there too pick it up on Saturday. The way it works, you make your contribution on Monday, the food is bought and brought to a distribution area (a park, school parking lot, etc) on Saturday and sorted, and you go pick up your items. It's ran by volunteers. I can't wait to get my first assortment!!! There are usually other items that you can make a contribution for to add to your freggies, like this week I am going to be getting an assortment of wraps (flavored tortillas). I will make another blog entry on Saturday to share what I got for my money... During the times of year when other places have farmer's markets for you to pick up fresh produce, this is a great opportunity for those of us who live where we don't get a lot of fresh foods...
Bountiful Baskets is offered in several states, the web sight is, check it out and see if they are in your area!
