Beck, Chapter 3 Tasks 1 and 2

Judith Beck (JB) states in Chapter 3 that in Stage 1 we will start learning and practicing the skills we will need for lifelong weight loss and maintenance.

Task 1 is gathering your supplies.

emoticon A set of 3x5 cards for my Response cards.

emoticon A set of blank business-sized cards. (I'm going to use more 3x5 cards.)

emoticon A digital scale (mine weighs to the nearest tenth of a pound).

emoticon Graph paper (I can copy her graph page out of the book but plan to continue using

emoticon A small box for the box to store positive memories about weight loss milestones. (Did not bother with this the first time, but got it this time around.)

emoticon A larger box to store Distractions (also did not do this the first time but have it this time).

emoticon Multiple sets of measuring spoons and cups. Yup.

emoticon Digital food scale. Yup.

emoticon Smaller plates and bowls, smaller forks and spoons. Yup -- I often use smaller plates and always use a cereal spoon rather than a soup spoon.

Task 2 - Set a Modest Weight-Loss Goal

While I would like to lose 12 pounds, I will start out trying to lose FIVE, as she suggests.

Check, check, and check. These two tasks were very easy but with the Season of Eating just ahead I know my challenges are just beginning! If I can get through the holidays and not gain weight or feel deprived, it will certainly be a huge milestone and a card for my Memory Box!!

    I purchased a food scale way back when (I still use it quite frequently). When I asked the sales lady where the food scale was, she brought me this little tiny thing. I said, "No, I need something to measure my food for my meals - this one is too small". She said that it was the largest food scale they had for sale. My portion size distortion was so great, that I could not imagine that the little scale in front of me was large enough for my food items. I laugh at this now - the food scale worked just perfectly. I also now have a much better understanding of how much of each item I should be eating at each meal. Wishing you success in reaching your weight loss goals!!

    You can do this.
    Planning healthy meals and stocking your kitchen with healthy choices. Become a food snob. Only the finest will do, that helps keep the crappy carbs at bay.

    So glad You are doing Beck, once again I will be living vicariously through you as I follow along. I plan on revisiting Beck in January.

    You're ready to go! I too am interested to hear about the green Beck book. And agree that a 5 pound loss is a good way to start. You can do it!

    At this time of the year -- a five pound LOSS is not a modest challenge. But if you decide to do it, I'm sure you can!!

    I'm so intrigued by this green Beck!! Following with keen interest!!

    (And, I'm sad to say -- I've never got to the point where I don't feel "deprived" -- even when I had permitted myself to balloon up to 90 pounds more than I weigh now!!)
