Happy "Count Your Many Blessings" Day!
Recently, I got to thinking... shouldn't we take a moment every day to count our blessings? Life all around us may appear to be chaotic - yet, the earth continues to work with a clock-like regularity. Autumn yields to winter; many-colored leaves give way to gravity and fall into cozy gatherings on lawns and walkways, before noisily scattering with a gusty breeze hot on their tails; hearts yearn for hearth and home while holiday memories pull us back to family and friends; and we take comfort in the knowledge that our creator loves us all.
Even so, when I see so many around me who are cold, hungry and lonely, I often feel guilty that I don't do more for them. The homeless will never go away. No matter how hard we try, mental illness, addictions and life itself will continue to boot people to the curb. But we are not alone: The LA Rescue Mission and Fred Jordan Missions serve big holiday dinners, but those folks are on skid row every day of the year, feeding bodies, minds and souls; Organizations everywhere use food banks to assist families in their neighborhoods that are in need; Habitats for Humanity utilize eager volunteers to help deserving families finally have a home; Church's reach out to their communities and neighboring cities to offer help and encouragement, sharing love and hope, one paint brush at a time; while others provide nice clothes and shoes to help women go to job interviews.
I am a creature that loves my comforts - yet I long to make a mark on our world. I desire to help those who are truly in need. Aren't you grateful that we were created this way? I am thankful that there are so many opportunities to be of service to those who have so much less than we do.
That's my thought for today!
