I Have a Choice

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

“For 24 years of my adult life, by choice, I weighed well over 200 pounds. I say 'by choice' because I have never 'accidentally' eaten anything, so when I choose to eat too much, I have chosen to weigh too much.” (Zig Ziglar)

Wow! Who knew?

Zig could have just as easily been talking about me when he said that!

But no more, because I have a choice.

Instead of eating food with little or no nutritional value all day long, then capping it off with cookies and (yes, I said 'AND') ice cream, I choose to eat foods that are healthy.

Instead of eating until I’m stuffed to the point of a stomach ache, I choose to stop eating when I am satisfied. It's NOT necessary for me to clean my plate, no matter what my parents told me about starving children in some far off country when I was a child.

Instead of drinking up needless calories from soda, wine, and fruit juices, I choose to drink water because it keeps me well-hydrated, helps me control my calories, and helps to energize my muscles.

Yes, I DO have a choice.

Instead of spending my time watching mindless tv shows or playing computer games for hours on end, I choose to be active – to walk, ride my bike, jog, swim, hike, and dance my way to a healthier me.

Instead of letting my muscles atrophy from disuse, I choose to build them up by doing resistance training several times a week. Those muscles will help improve my balance, rev my metabolism into a fat-burning furnace, and decrease my risk for several chronic health conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease.

There are MANY choices in front of me and I am making them in a responsible, goal-oriented way.

I value a life of happiness, integrity, good health, and longevity and I CHOOSE to live in accordance with those values.

In doing so, I choose to be purposeful, effective, focused, and consistent.

It doesn’t matter what happened in the past or what other people think or say. I know myself best and I am the only one with the power to make choices for me. Therefore, it is up to me to make the right choices to determine the direction of my life.

There are literally millions of opportunities to make good choices ahead of me. Every day, from moment to moment, there are choices to be made. What to eat or drink. What exercise I’ll enjoy on any given day and for how long. Choosing to get enough sleep at night. Even day to day things like driving safely, taking vitamins, not smoking or drinking alcohol to excess, following the recommendations of my health care providers, and spending time with people who support and love me. The list of positive choices I have the opportunity to make is practically endless!

Then there are the emotional and mental choices I can make . . .

I can choose my perspective on any given situation, my attitude, my actions, my outlook, and the responses I make to people and things in my environment.

Every choice I make, in every situation, has the potential to bring me closer to my goals and into better alignment with my life vision and values.

Going forward, whatever happens, I have a choice. It’s up to me to use that power of choice in a positive and responsible way, again and again and again, to ensure my life is everything I want and deserve it to be.

I have a choice.

And so do you.

Don’t Give Up!
