Lost Blog: Weight Loss Gimmicks

Friday, November 07, 2014

Introduction

During the five years that I have been on SparkPeople, I have composed several blogs, that for one reason or another, I never posted. I have decided to post a few of the "Lost Blogs".

Lost Blog: February 9, 2010 - Weight Loss Gimmicks

It is always nice when someone notices you have dropped a few pounds. I saw and old friend a few weeks back. He complimented my on my weight loss. He then asked, "How did you do it - Adkins?" I stammered "Uh no, I eat right, exercise and joined SparkPeople." My friend gave me a blank stare. I gave up trying to explain.

For years we have all heard to lose weight we have to eat less and exercise more. That just doesn't sell. And eating less and exercising is hard!

Lots of people are looking for the magic bullet.

"Lose weight without dieting or exercising! Just send us $102.95 for the magic weight loss elixir. This is the secret potion used by Tibetan monks for 10,000 years!"

There are also pills that are supposed to take the weight off - no dieting and no exercise. In the 1970's my mom bought an appetite suppressing "candy" called Ayds.

My mom was not overweight. However, in the 1970's Twiggy ultra-skinny was in.

There have been weight loss gimmick forever. Metabolism boosting pills have been popular for a long time. The sale of Skinny pills is a big industry.

-----------------------End of Lost Blog ------------------

I didn't post this blog in 2010 because I could not think of a graceful ending. I didn't want to be preachy, such as "Save your money and follow the SparkPeople plan." I didn't want to be superior by saying, "I have never fallen for gimmicks", which is not true BTW.

However, this might be a good way to end this Lost Blog:

oh boy I once sat through a meeting for a class action lawsuit with my MIL over something called finfin or maybe phinphin, no idea but talk about scared straight

What I really found depressing other than the fact that for all the big talk my MIL ended up with something like $400 out of it, was the number of people in that room that were quite clearly way overweight. So not only did this little trick not work, but no other trick they tried worked either.

I've been sporadic here and missed this. It's a great Lost Blog. PLMITCH made an interesting comment .... wondering if the response to the weight loss question change over time. I'm hoping he is right and that as time goes by we start changing our views for the better. But with the amount of diet aides out there, one has to wonder if things have changed.

Still, I'm not sure where I saw this quote, I wish I did because I want to give the person who posted it their due. I thought it was a good one...it went something to the effect of:

"Exercising is hard. Being overweight is hard. Chose your hard."

Wait....Ayds is real? It must have been before my time. :-) I get really bothered when "stories" on Facebook pop up and it's an ad for a new diet pill, fruit, elixir...I wish I could block them!

The only thing that helped me lose 86lb is diet and exercise. And yes, the ending of this blog may be true for some people. I like to exercise, but I have a friend who I'm trying to encourage to lose weight and he hates exercising. He said yesterday "It's easy for you because you like it"...well, I told him exactly what your quote says. I do like it, but I would rather be eating chocolate and watching TV. I exercise because it's the only why to get where I want to be!

I'm glad you "found" and posted this blog!

    Hehe, I'm guilty too :)
    But not since joining SparkPeople.
Don't agree with your ending though :)

Great blog and glad you found it in the archives! Today it's the quick-fix herbs, berries and juices that are being touted by the magazines and TV personality Drs. It's so confusing that it makes eating right and exercising way more simple LOL.

I was overweight since I was a kid and my mom was too. Together we tried so many of those gimmicks and fad diets. The mention of the Ayds candies made my smile because that's one of the things we tried too when I was young. Problem was, they didn't really suppress my appetitie and they tasted so good I could eat a bunch of them LOL! And Tab and Fresca were the main (maybe only) diet sodas back then.

    - Love the "lost" blog. I wonder if you'd get the same response today vs 4 years ago if someone asks you that question? Hopefully, slowly but surely, the education is sinking in.

    - And your background on your page has greyhounds! I assume you have some? How many? Where did you adopt from? We have 3 -- our oldest, Gigi (12.5 years young), just came out of surgery earlier today for removal of a growth on the outside of her ear and removal of 7 teeth! Assuming no complications, we'l pick her up at 5PM today!
