Updated: Spark Tracker vs FITBIT trial days 1 and 2 reviewed

First let me explain why I'm trying both. I love my FITBIT ZIP but I have friends and family that I would like to join me in the fun and success of a healthy and happy lifestyle. I wanted to give each of them trackers for some motivation. The SPARK Trackers at under $30 they were a great deal and I was able to purchase 4 of them for the price of 2 FitBit Zips.

Now, I knew that I wanted this transition to SPARKPeople to be a non-stressful event for my loved ones. I figured I'd be the go to, so I'd better have a clue.

Typical FITBIT ZIP day: Sat 10/25
steps 13237
cals 2764 total
miles 6.95
minutes 60 intense 54mod 118 light = 114 minutes of FITBIT all day activity time
all day total minutes are generally my walk and run totals
light minutes tend to include the times that I strength train, stretch or run around the office on a work day

I worked out with both trackers on my waist Sunday and both were rather accurate. About the same location and about the same results. The biggest issue I had was trying to cancel the duplicate information. I had to disconnect my FITBIT from SPARK in order to do that. So at this time I'm bouncing between both sites to get readings.

Sun 10/26/14
FitBit information:
steps 11536
cals 2576 total
miles 5.76
minutes 65 intense 38 mod 88 light = 103 minutes of FITBIT all day activity time

SparkTracker information.
steps 11676
cals 1614 total 1069 wo
miles 11 7.6 wo
minutes 209 106 wo

Since the miles were off I may have made a mistake hitting the calibrate button but I never got anywhere with it. It didn't ask for any information, just said "calibrating"

I wear dresses and heels to the office. Yesterday, the bra method didn't work well at all -- it only noted about 1/2 my steps. After my 45 minute lunch work out and a walk home my Fit Bit noted most of 10000 steps which was normal range. SparkTracker registered about 5000. So, last night I put on a footy and tried to get my 10000 steps registered for the SparkTracker goal. I walked/jogged in place and around the house/yard for over 2 hours in order for the SPARK to reach my 10000 goal. = ( maybe the SparkTracker isn't meant for that type of movement.

FitBit information:
steps 25327
cals 3609 total
miles 13.42
minutes 141 intense 67 mod 76 light = 208 minutes of FITBIT all day activity

SparkTracker information.
steps 10196
cals 2582 total 817 wo
miles 12.6 5.75 wo
minutes 433 154 wo

I'm frustrated with my SPARK TRACKER right now... I'm not so much focused on the cal (they are guestimates anyway) but I try to track my steps daily and my mileage for walks with friends and such.

I KNOW my FITBIT is accurate as I calibrated it to a pedometer previously and after a month of walking/jogging in place, on the roads, or on a trampoline it was spot on. I'm a bare footer, so the waist method works best for me, but the SPARK Tracker is bulky under my dresses and doesn't work on all heels. The FITBIT can lay flat in the waistline of my hose because I can remove it from its casing.

SInce my friends wear pants/jeans and tennies most days I don't see it being an issue for them. I may have to revise my plan -- use both. FITBIT ZIP on days that i work. Spark Tracker on days I don't. I may also have to switch trackers for trampoline and Leslie Sansone workouts. That way I can participate in the monthly goals and possibly get the best of both worlds.

I wanted to post my views for several reasons.
1. in order for me to keep track of the results
2. in order for others to give me feedback if they have experienced similar results and found way around them.

I really do want this to work. Any help or advise is appreciated.

FYI: I will be posing this question to the SPARK TRACKER Team site as well. I haven't seen much in the way of a specific resolution to this situation yet but I understand it can be done.

It all depends on what's important to you. I use mine every day on my shoe to count steps only... I'd love to see 10,000 steps some day but if I don't then that's OK too. Either way your body is benefiting from any and ALL of the exercise it gets and that's really all that matters. emoticon

if your fitbit is on your arm you have to know with every movement of your arm it tracks a step. that is why my brother stop using his . so if your brush your hair the fitbit will track it. so if it is on your arm this may be why, the tracker is only going to track your steps. mine works great in my bra. I wear it at the half way point of the cup area. I wear tennis a lot so I wear it on my laces. hope you get it all working. I love mine. doing a mile is mostly only 2000 steps if short maybe a bit more like 2300.
