Celebrating with food

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

I love food.

I know they say that you shouldn't celebrate with food, but it was my birthday yesterday and that is how I wanted to play it. :)

I started my day with scrapple.

Wha-huh, you say?

Some background: My wife is from Philadelphia. Scapple is a breakfast "meat-thing" back East especially around the Amish country. My wife loves scrapple and introduced it to me many years ago with the prophetic words "You aren't going to like it." Ha! The gauntlet had been thrown. There was no way I wasn't going to try it now. Needless to say, not only did I try it, I loved it. :) Fast forward to current day: its really hard to find scrapple in California. Buuuut... I did find a restaurant in Berkeley called Bette's Oceanview Diner that serves it. I have known about this place for a couple years now. When Theresa, asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday I told her I wanted to go to Bette's for breakfast. She gave me a look. "Yes, you heard me right, we are going to drive for 1.5 hrs through morning rush hour traffic so I can have scrapple for breakfast." Bless her heart, she agreed.

Bette's Diner looks EXACTLY like what you would think a place called "Bette's Diner" that serves scrapple would look like. Breakfast was really good. Creamy scrambled eggs, home fries with lots of crisply bits and, OMG house made scrapple! So crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside. And, surprise! Really spicy! Heaven. They also had excellent coffee AND they make their own cream scones. To die for.

It was everything I wanted in a splurge breakfast and I thoroughly enjoyed every bite.

After breakfast, we window shopped to walk off some of the calories. Went to a book store and bought an actual book. :)

We headed home, and I played video games until dinner. :) Yes, I am a 13 yr old boy.

For dinner we left the kids at home and went to Indian food. My sister came with us. She had never had Indian food, like, ever. We ordered pretty standard fare. I stuck with Murg Tandoori and Butter Chicken and of course, garlic Naan. I'll spring the goat on her next time. :) My sister took one bite of the naan and ordered another basket on the spot. LOL. We ate, drank, chatted and laughed. All in all an excellent event.

So, yeah, I celebrated my birthday with food (and video games). For me it was a perfect day. Today I am back in the saddle and right back on track.

I feel awesome.

Duuude! Happy Birthday!! Sounds like an awesome day- i love meat so I need to look up scrapple. And I need to try indian food too- never had it, like, ever ;) MMM california- sounds nice right now. We've barely had sun the past few weeks in Wisconsin.

I read your High Five blog as well- I ALWAYS want to do that when I see people out running. I may have once or twice. Congrats on getting that much progress for C25k! Like I said in my blog last night, I ran 5 mins non stop and that was a small victory. I remember when i used to run for 50 minutes non-stop. WTF mate.

Happy belated birthday! I don't think there is anything wrong with celebrating with food. I refuse to have a birthday without cheesecake! Being a SoCal native, I had never heard of scrapple until I moved to Baltimore two years ago. No, I've not tried it (I don't think they have a veggie version... yet! They have "soyrizo," so you never know! LOL).

Yayyy!! Happpy birthday to you, my friend!! emoticon emoticon

Who says you shouldn't celebrate with food?? Point 'em out to me and I'll go chuck last year's fruitcake at 'em! Seriously, though... I don't see anything wrong with celebrating special occasions with food. I think the problems arise when we start 'celebrating' every week or every day. You know - "The sun rose today! Yippee! Let's have cake." Yeah... NO! emoticon I used to do that, too! And then on actual holidays and celebration days, the special foods just didn't have the same impact.

I've seen scrapple in the frozen section at the grocery store (I live in Cali too!), but have yet to try it. It looks sort of like a meatloaf to me. I'm sure your wife's homemade scrapple is better than anything from the grocery store, though!

And ... you bought a book...? Wow... I didn't know people still did that! emoticon

Celebrating your birthday with loved ones, food, and video games. I don't know... It sounds pretty great to me! emoticon

Hey! Happy Birthday ,Just a tad late. Sorry about that.

Sounds like you had a killer day though... You bought an actual book? *Gasp* who does that? okay the total nerd in me has to know which one you bought because, well, I'm nosy and because I have about seven book cases in my house all filled with Fantasy/ Fiction stories.

Hey Now, The 13 year old boy in me really resents you making fun of our War Craft Fetish, just so you know... Why? Because we had to give up beating the ugly out of the horde for 5-6 hours each day, just so I could get healthy.

Happy Birthday! It sounds like you had a great time, glad you enjoyed it! I don't think there is anything wrong with celebrating special occasions with food, as long as they are actual special occasions. I think a birthday definitely counts!

    Happy birthday!

I think you picked the perfect way to spend your day. I love that your wife got on board with the driving in traffic (so she is awesome). I love that you lazed around all day playing video games. Not sure about scrapple, but I do love Indian food and usually pick that for birthday dinners as well.

    No cake?
