Long Time No See and New Hip

Saturday, October 18, 2014

Haven't been here in a while. I've been very busy...eating and gaining weight. And boy, have I succeeded. I'm at my highest weight and am having to have total hip replacement on Oct. 30th.

My hip began hurting in April but just thought it was a muscle and tried stretching and nothing helped it. Finally went to the doctor in August and found out I have avascular necrosis, basically my bone lost blood supply and has now died and will eventually collapse, hence the new joint.

I was in denial at first and tried PT, swimming, anything I could think of. Then I went back for return appt. and doc told me it was as bad as any hip he's ever seen, why thanks so much.

I'm only 44. FORTY-FOUR!!! 44 and having to have a fake hip. Although something weird happened to cause this I'm sure my weight didn't help matters. Lugging around 272 lbs would make any hip cave in.

So, back to the drawing board, again, for the 5,333rd time. But, I know I'll have to lose to the weight to not damage the new hip so that's my motivation. At least I'll be off work for a while and can focus on diet and recovery and hopefully get back on here more often than I have.

If anyone has any ideas, advice, exercises, hip stories of your own, chocolate, um, scratch that last one, please let me know.

Thanks for listening.

Oh no! I'm so sorry you have to have a hip replaced. My mom is having one done December 1st, but she's 77 - so I know what you mean about the age, but this may have happened even if you were a tiny little thing. You've got your mind in the right place though, a healthier lifestyle will be better for your new hip. And really, you don't need any tips. You know the foods you shouldn't be eating. Stop eating the junk foods for a month and you'll most likely lose the craving for them. The hardest part will probably be to get your husband on board with you if he's anything like mine was. Surround yourself with people who will enable a healthier lifestyle, not sabotage it. And get out and move ASAP. Ask Karen about her 'Zumba on crutches' stories. We're here for you!!!! Good luck!
