Garage Sale

Monday, October 13, 2014

The town my sister lives in has a city wide sponsored garage sale. You sign-up and the city hands out flyers and puts up posters around town and takes an ad out in the paper, so you can imagine it's pretty well attended. This year it looked like they had well over 300 households signed up.

I shamelessly take advantage of this yearly event and cart all my crap over to my sister's house. Yes, it's kinda a PITA, but I get to hang out with my sister and it's fun to talk to all the people the come by.

Selling stuff that you'd normally have to PAY someone to haul away is a definite bonus. For instance, old pots and pans. Our old non-stick pans were warped and the lids don't fit anymore. We finally broke down and bought new ones (yay!) and I was going to throw out the old ones, because I honestly didnt think Goodwill would want them. When I was tossing stuff in the truck to take to my sister's I made the last minute decision to bring them too. I put them in a box for $1 a piece. I came home with an empty box, proving if the price is right people will buy anything.

People also crack me up. I wasn't trying to make a mint. I confess my prices where pretty low right from the start. I really didn't want to cart my crap back home again. Anyway, I had two Xena 12 inch dolls for sale for a $1/each. (Yes, I was a HUGE Xena fan back in the day. Don't judge.) These dolls are brand new, still in the box. The boxes are a little worse for wear but still. Anyway, this dude in his 40's comes up to me with the dolls and a beer stein (also priced at $1) and says, "Can I get all 3 for $2?" Seriously? I looked him right in the eye and said, "Come on man, really?" In a are-you-f'ing-kidding-me tone. He says, "Well I am trying to decide if I really need them or not." Me, "I can tell you right now you definitely do not need them." He hand's me $3. *snort*

At the end of the day, we had made a little over $200. Not a huge amount but way more then what I would get giving it all to Goodwill. It's going into the "Hawaii Vacation Fund".

Hawaii is a special place for me. My dad worked for United back in the day and we used to go to Hawaii every spring break. I have lots of fond memories of our family vacations. I am looking forward to taking the boys. I had a rule though, we couldn't go until the boy's learned to swim, because really, what's the point of taking kids to Hawaii if they can't swim? Well, they have been taking lessons for a year now and are getting very good at swimming. Now I just need to lose some more weight so I feel confident when we all hit the beach! :)

Why didn't I get a notice that you posted this?? I'm only seeing it now! Arghhh! emoticon

Wow! 200 bucks for stuff you would've just tossed is fantastic! I cracked up hearing about that guy and the Xena dolls! emoticon And no judgement here. I was a big Xena fan, too! So was my cousin, Lori. She actually named her Australian Shepherd Xena. Appropriate, no? lol Well, sort of. I think Lucy Lawless is actually from New Zealand. :-)

Speaking of garage sales - I don't know when the tradition started, but our mountain communities has TONS of garage sales every year during the Memorial Day weekend and then the Labor Day weekend. We're so well-known for the event that people from the outlying cities will drive all the way up the mountain just to check them out. We usually drive around to see what's on offer. On Labor Day weekend I found a great glass topped bamboo table that spun around on a lazy susan type thing for 30 bucks. My friend saw the same table in a magazine and it was going for over $400! That was my bargain yard sale buy for the season. :-)

I agree with the kids learning how to swim. Even if you weren't taking them to Hawaii, I think it's one of those invaluable skills to have. And Hawaii is going to be so much more fun! You should take them paddle boarding! My daughter just went a couple of months ago, and she's a big paddle boarder. She said nothing can compare to paddle boarding in Hawaiian waters. :-)

How about you? When did you learn how to swim?

It always seems like a good idea, I just don't want to bring the stuff to the garage sale and then have to bring it back. I guess I am lazy like that, haha.

You sold your Xena dolls for a buck a piece! OMG! I'd have bought them and paid for postage.. The character was an awesome one and I'm not ashamed, I love those kind of shows. Big big mythology fan here, if a person can write their own mythology for a created character and people buy into it then that's talent no matter if it is everyone's "cup of tea or not" .

Love the idea of a Hawaii vacation fund. Also agree with the must learn to swim part, but you should be a confident you now! Your working your backside off one week at a time so smile and go get yourself some plane tickets!

With the last of the unpacking we've been giving so much stuff to the AmVets. Like the Goodwill, kind of, but they come around about once a month and pick up curbside. How cool that you have a saving goal to put the money towards! I'm glad you got to enjoy some time with your sister, too.

Where I live our town does this as well as a town not to far from me. It is a huge huge event and really a pita to try and get through, but it's very well attended. And people will buy anything just like you said. It's funny.

That is hysterical - people will do anything for a bargain.... even when they're already getting a bargain.

Awesome job on saving the money for a Hawaii trip! I've been 3 times and LOVE it there. I'm sure you will all have a wonderful time when you get there :)

That's awesome! Can you do a Xena battle cry? I bet you can. emoticon

"I can tell you right now you definitely do not need them" emoticon omg, that was funny!!

I adore Xena. I would have pushed that man aside and shoved $5 in your face! If that hadn't worked, I would have shoved $10 in your face! I get a tad competitive when it comes to second-hand shopping----------not my best quality. By the way, I loved your retort to the man about not "needing" the stuff. I'm still chuckling over it. Sounds like it was a really fun day.

You are a lucky girl to have had a chance to travel with your entire family to a place as beautiful as Hawaii on a regular basis. I've never been, but I plan on retiring on the beach there and learning how to surf.

I hope you get your wish and are bikini-ready. Either way, you are beautiful as you are right now, and you will be in the company of those whom you love best-------and you deserve to do the things you love and to have a wonderful time.

    Thank-you, I loved this!

I would have totally bought your Xena dolls. I'm quite sure my wife would have been absolutely beside herself with excitement if I brought those babies home!
