California's drought and my thoughts

Sunday, August 24, 2014

I have to make a blog on this. Things aren't looking good at all.

California is currently Final Stage level 5 - Exceptional Drought

2013 was California's driest in 119 years of records and this year is going to be just as bad or worse. California is about 1/6 of the population of the US. Lots and lots of people. But the real problem is not just the rainfall but the people that think everything is ok and continue acting like nothing is happening.

California has lost so much water we the ground level has gone up 1/6 of an inch. The lack of water in California is making the bedrock near mountains rise and farm soil to sink. As crazy as that might sound, its happening right now.

You know when its bad when someone starts stealing water from people who have a backup water supplies. As for the people that don't get it and think everything is ok. Well all they are doing is looking a pictures of old photos of full lakes and if they have any new pictures showing full lakes, I will say this. The reason that there are new full is because of the fact that almost all the snow has melted off the mountains because of the record heat. As you can see from the pictures above there is almost no snow left.

So much much water does California need in order to end the drought. Basically, 15 inches of water on every square inch of California and 12 feet of snow in the mountains. Crazy I know but that is how much water is missing from California right now.

Now you are likely thinking 15 inches of water everywhere..... that's a flood! True and false. True that's alot of water but false because what I am talking about is filling up not just the rivers and the lakes but the underground rivers and caves (Like underground lakes). These are used by people who have wells and well pumps. Fish also use the underground water ways.

Now here is the really bad part. If the water keeps going down it will get to a level where we will not be able to drink it due to the fact the toxicity levels become to high. Right now its ok to get drinking water from the faucet.

Wow, that was alot of typing I am done. LOL!

It's good to get that off of your chest. We recently visited the vanishing Lake Mead area. The loss is astounding. We also were at Mammoth Lakes recently. The green mountain topography makes the lower water levels less obviously but it's there. It's something to think about. And I always do. Seeing another 36" water main break and flood yet another Los Angeles street is heartbreaking. I live rurally and have a decent aquafir but more and more neighbors have to give up on their wells and start trucking in their water. I sometimes wonder if those water deprived Mad Max movies are around the corner for us. But then I think.. Everything is cyclical and I remain optimistic for the future of CA.
