I haven't blogged in 3 whole months. I have all kinds of excuses, but the truth is I've been out living life for all its worth and making up for the miserable winter we had.
In the last three months, I have gotten settled into my new apartment and am loving living alone again. I have fallen back into a few of my old habits about housekeeping that had improved greatly with roommates, but that's a whole other story! :)
The school year ended and we've been doing summer hours, which means I work 4 9-hour days on Monday -Thursday and Friday mornings. That means I am getting to work at 7:30 each morning. I tried getting up at 5 a.m. to get to the gym by 5:45 for a swim/water jog before work and have managed to make it 3 times! Next week is my last week of summer hours so while I am used to getting up earlier, I will start getting up at 5:30 and see if I can make it to the pool consistently. BTW - I am NOT a morning person unless morning starts at 10 a.m. :)
In June a friend mentioned on FB that she was interested in doing the Women Run the Cities race on September 28th and would anyone like to do it with her. I said sure, but she had to train with me to keep me on track all summer. We have been training together 3 times a week ever since. Together we are still in week 2 of the C25K program, but we have been consistently making progress. We have managed to keep each other on track for 6 weeks! Tomorrow we run/walk the Tiki Run - a non timed event with a REALLY cute tank top as the race shirt and LED Leis, and all you can eat Hawaiian pizza at the end! I will be timing it with my iPhone, but we really signed up because of the tank top and the leis.
This is our practice run so Kari can say she has done a 5K before the "real" one.
One thing I realized this week on our run is that I am in better shape than I gave myself credit for! Since Kari and I started training at the same time for this race, I figured we were at about the same fitness level. We are similar sizes and weights, but I have been working out diligently since October with only a few slips of the wagon. This week we decided that Kari needed to stay on week 2 of our training plan for another week. At first I didn't think that was a bad idea for me either, but then we went for our Wednesday night run and I barely broke a sweat and didn't take my inhaler and had ZERO problems with the workout. This was a BIG change for me. I am a sweat-er, big time and I have exercise induced asthma that only really gives me trouble when I run.
Because of how the workout felt on Wednesday, I decided to push myself a bit on Thursday. Thursday was a "rest" day, but I decided to "run" instead. I had to go to the gym with another friend to get her signed up so I brought my workout clothes and did a Week 3 workout on the treadmill. (warm up, run 90 seconds, walk 90 seconds, run 3 minutes, walk 3 minutes, repeat, cool down) Not only did I finish with some amount of ease, (I was just starting to struggle at the end of my second 3 minutes run!) but I also finished with my best time EVER! 1.75 miles 30.32 minutes - 12:45 min/mi average!
So my plan for August to continue my positive efforts so far, I am going to continue to train with Kari 3 days a week as my easier days. I am the one leading that training since I have attempted the C25K before. One Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I am going to continue my own pace for the training program. When Kari and I do our training, we run/walk the 30 minutes of the weekly workout and then walk to a certain point on the river trail and turn around and walk back to my apartment. It's a total of 3.4 miles and currently takes us 65 minutes. (We have cut about 10 minutes off our time since we started without really trying!) When I train alone, I will just be doing the 30 minute workout + whatever it takes to get me back to my apartment!
That plus water jogging before work should keep the positive changes and habits going. I haven't lost much in the last few months, but those reasons are definitely for another blog and are issues that are back on track. :) I will try to post photos from tomorrow over the weekend.
