The combination of high heat and high humidity is really starting to wear on me and the rest of the desert dwellers. My enthusiasm for getting up early to exercise is gone. While we are in the middle of monsoon season, we rarely get rain. When we do, it's localized and only hits small areas. Mostly it builds up, drizzles a tiny bit and fizzles out. The past three mornings were stifling, but nothing like this morning.
Our shirts were plastered to our bodies shortly after we started walking, and rivulets of sweat ran down our necks. For the first 3 miles the only thing we waved to was the gnats that buzzed annoyingly around our heads. As the sun came up over the mountains we enjoyed cool breezes and the sharp contrast of the stormy sky to our left and the gorgeous pastel clouds around us. As we walked on, we could just start to make out the beginnings of a rainbow.
Gradually, it became a full blown arch that stretched out completely in front of us and a second one that never became as prominent. Well worth getting out of bed for!
