I began this journey in 2009 and I had success following Weight Watchers. I joined Weight Watchers in September 2009, beginning at 168 and got to 152 losing 16 pounds and I felt so much better. But came December 2009 - I spiraled out of control. I was so disappointed with myself and the discipline to just eat right was gone. At this time I wasn't even exercising! I have started and stopped so many times (just look at my past journal entries) and tried so many fad diets, but it is something about going to the doctor and being told you are obese and it will begin to affect your health. At that point my doctor recommended I lose weight - I heard her but my thoughts were "I feel fine so I will do a little something but I am not going to give up all of my favorite foods." And the visit in January wasn't for a physical but because of a car accident.

My doctor wanted a full work-up so I scheduled my physical in February and the follow up appointment was in April to receive my results. Well I learned that not only was I obese, but my cholesterol was high and I had borderline hypertension. Both my parents died at an early age, 60 and 63, and I didn't want to be in the boat. So I made the choice to do something about it.

On April 4th I weighed in at the doctor's at 175 pounds. She said in order to avoid medication she was giving me 6 months to get to 140 pounds. I am 5'3" so my healthy BMI range is 104 - 141 pounds. I began going to the gym in April and did cardio 18 days out of 30, consumed more water and no more fast food. In May I did cardio 20 days out of 31. On June 1st I weighed in at 173.4, however I saw that I was losing inches but the scale wasn't moving down fast enough for me. So I found a trainer and felt like working out with him twice a week replaced all of the other time I was in the gym and I believed that working out with a trainer I could eat whatever I wanted - let me tell you it was a bad decision. I did get to 170.4 pounds but I had to go back to what I know, fired the personal trainer and I completely revamped my diet to a low fat diet which was recommended by my physician.

So now we are here...July 1st I weighed in at 170.4. I went to the grocery store and purchased my lean meats, veggies and fruits. Right now the only carbs I am getting are from fruit and veggies. Today is the 17th of July and I have worked out (cardio and/or weights) 13 days out of 17. I am up to 2.5 - 3.0 liters of water a day and my scale at home read 159.8 this morning. I couldn't even fathom seeing 150 anything since 2009! I just want to say in order to see what you want you have to do the work. I am so glad my doctor gave me the tools I needed and I used them. Although her goal for me is 140 by October 3rd, my goal is 136. I am well on my way and excited.

My size 14's are baggy, you do not see my big tummy poking out anymore, my cellulite on my thighs is smoothing out, I am wearing belts that I couldn't fathom putting back on from 2009, I sleep better (minus the trips to the bathroom - lol), I am no longer depressed about my weight and I overall feel good about myself.

I am just so thankful and will continue to press on!

    Congrats, Charvonne! I'm in kind of the same boat as you. I'm 5'3 and my highest weight was 172 lbs and am currently down to 162. Had my first physical in 4 years in July and found out my a1c levels were high. So although I have been trying to eat healthier, choosing whole grains over white bread and rice and fish or chicken over red meats whenever I can, my determination to lose weight went into SERIOUS MODE in these last few weeks since my lab results came in. And I'm hoping to get to 140 before winter. And definitely when I do reach my goal weight this time, I'm gonna be more cautious about any weight gain. I definitely don't want any setbacks.

    Like you, finding out these lab results was a bit depressing. I don't feel like I'm any more fatigued than usual, nor do I feel sick or show any signs of low energy. And though I knew my BMI was not good, I always kept thinking obese emoticon is someone at the weights you see on The Biggest Loser. I'm healthy as long as I don't get that big. But the doctor visit was a wake up call and I want to get to a healthy BMI ASAP.
