Hike to Hanging Lake
Sunday, July 13, 2014
Went to Glenwood Springs Colorado for my hubby's 50th birthday. The highlight of the trip was the hike to Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon. We tried to go on Thursday but got there too late and could not find a place to park. So we gave it 1 more try on Friday morning as we were heading home. Set the alarm for 6am and got there by 7:30am. Plenty of places to park when you get there early.
The path to the trail was nice and smooth.
Read the sign and thought how bad could it be. Many of the people I work with have been and said it was a great hike.
The beginning of the trail head. Almost turned back without even trying, but made the choice to go ahead and try.
Followed a creek with little waterfalls all the way up.
When we weren't climbing over rocks and boulders the path was dirt with lots of tree roots to step over and around.
Right before you get to the top there are rails to help you navigate the large boulders and very steep climb.
Here I am at the top next to hanging lake.
Here is hubby and son at the waterfall just past hanging lake. Only had to climb and additional 100 or so yards to get here again straight up.
Took us a little over 3 hours to get up and a little over 2 hours to get down. Round trip just over 6 hours. Well worth it to see such a beautiful clear lake. The trail is listed as just over 1 mile, but my fitbit registered just over 5 miles round trip. It might be 1 mile straight up, but takes a lot more steps twisting and turning all the way up. Still can't believe we made it up and down without twisting or breaking anything. My son is just over 300lbs so we had to stop frequently so he could rest and catch his breath. Going to do again in a few years to see if we can beat our time. Many people passed us on the way up and on the way down, but we were going faster than anyone sitting on the couch.
