Carrot Dog

So it the time of year when you really want to bite into a yummy hot dog, bun and dripping in ketchup and mayonnaise...Wait, I'm a vegetarian and have you seen the ingredients list on the veggies dogs...yikes

But a carrot...really...so I'm trying this out..


2 Carrots
2 Buns
1/4 Cup Vinegar
1/4 Cup Water
1 Tablespoon Soy Sauce
1/4 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/4 Teaspoon Onion Powder
Black Pepper to taste

Clean, cut and peel the carrots (like you always do). Steam the carrots (or boil) until you can put a fork through but they are still hard (you don't want mushy).

Then mix all the other ingredients (ok not the bun) together in a container that you can put the carrots in to marinate.

When the carrots are done you can cool them off (I forgot to do that) in water to stop it from cooking. Then add to the marinate mixture, over night.

The next day put a little marinate mixture and the carrots and sauteed them until they are brownish, black (not black like it's burnt).

Then I drained the pan and heated up the buns. I like the buns crispy.
Then add the mayonnaise and ketchup (or what ever you like).

Ok how did I like them...plate empty..they were good...I could not taste the carrots (although I would not have mind cause it was good)...I'm going to get some ready for tomorrow's lunch.


I did measure the exact measurements (usually I don't measure).

I looked at many recipes and got the ingredient of what I thought I would like.

All the recipes were very close, they used different spices, some used garlic cloves, different vinegars (I used white); apple, rice, and others.

They all used liquid smoke (ok that sounded gross to me), and ginger (I'm not sure how I like ginger)

So you can use these ingredients if you're brave...lol

I just used 100% whole wheat bun from the grocery store but you use whatever buns you like or don't use a bun.

I had extra marinade left so I'm saving it for the next carrot dog.

    I think this sounded pretty flipped out! But amazing!!! Almost with a stir fry sauce if it had rice vinegar. Adding tomato puree would have made it into a barbeque sauce. I think I like vegetables like this but I would have not put it into bread, instead I would have made a vegan burger or hot dog out of beans & maybe tofu, and used the sauces either internally or as a sauce on the outside. either way at least you are eating very creatively. I think that's the thing with cooking, is to try new things, and experiment with ideas. you just never can image what tastes good together. I have mixed potatoes with cauliflower, lima beans with corn, fish with beef broth, pickle juice with potato soup. So whens that cook book coming out? You do a great job. eva

    Sounds good! I'll skip the bun- and the soy sauce I'll skip and use aminos- and just have the carrots that way for a different way to make carrots. Sounds worth the extra effort! Thanks. emoticon emoticon

    Wha-oh, sounds very different and interesting but delish! I may try this recipe. But make one for carrot and maybe make another one with tofu . The marinade sauce should work with tofu too. Don't you think? Thanks for sharing! emoticon emoticon emoticon
