Bouganvillea Garden Project - Update #2

Monday, June 23, 2014

I'm up to nine of the twelve Bougainvillea plants planted. The little flowers were not looking very good so I have put them temporarily on my left additional bed. The right additional bed has landscape fabric covered with two bags of mulch & some bricks. I want to kill as much of the grass before I plant in it.

Set up the second main section with bricks & mulch. The last three Bougainvilleas are hanging out there waiting to be planted. Did I mention the landscape bricks I'm using for edging weigh close to 10#. This section had an additional eighteen. Only handled those about five times each. The original thirty bricks got handled at least seven times per brick. The next 24 for that bed only got handled three times. (Going to the Chiropractor every week during this process.)

After I finish planting all twelve Bougainvilleas, I'm going to take a day to celebrate by going to Bok Tower. After that, I'll put in the small plants. I'm going to space them differently than planned. Instead of every foot, I'll place them between the Bougainvilleas.

After the beds are all set up, I'll set up the drip irrigation system. Have everything I need for the two main beds.

I have spent hours trying to pull as much of the grass out of the six inch space between our fence & our neighbors. As I dig holes for my plants, taking the sand I dig out and putting it between fences as mulch. When I'm done, I put regular mulch over that. Came up with some better tools to do that job. The first sections I did have more grass growing than the newer. Will do some weeding before I put the mulch over the between fence section.

I'm not sure what I want to do with the side beds. First, I thought Hibiscus. Now I'm leaning towards something not as high. Will wait to see what the bed looks like in the fall to make up my mind. In the meantime, grass will be killed under those sections. Should make it easier to put in whatever.
