Are you listening to your body? Is it telling you something?

Thursday, June 19, 2014

My car has been making some noises but I just let it slide. Then yesterday, the noise became a banging, grinding shaking beast! I had to stop driving it and take a serious look. And it turned out to be serious--the wheel bolts were broken, my wheel was ready to come off!!! Just two days before, I was driving 70 miles an hour down the interstate--what if it had come off then!!!

I think that is the way we should think about our bodies, instead of talking down to ourselves about our tubby middles, thunder thighs, and over stuffed trunks. We need to stop and listen to what it is trying to tell us----before it just ultimately gives up! For me, it was trying to say more than just "feed me right." My fat is telling me that something needs to be tuned up in my life...those childhood hurts need to be turned around, those coping skills I learned then (eat, eat, eat) are not serving me now. They are not the skills I need now to live a complex, sometimes stressful adult life. I am not powerless now and can learn new skills. And when I do, my body will relax and quit trying to catch my attention.

Then my body and I can charge on down that interstate, without worrying about something falling off!! Except the excess weight that I won't need anymore because I'll be listening.

How true! I have been neglecting my poor body terribly. Not any more. Sticking to my good eating and faithfully tracking to make sure my calories are not in excess - thanks to SP. And today, believe it or not, signing up at a gym that is COOL inside so that I don't have an excuse not to walk now that it's gotten so horribly hot and humid (Alabama). I might even try out some of the weight machines. ( :

Love this! We have to perform preventative maintenance on our bodies, just like we do our cars.

Great analogy. How often do we ignore the little signs that our body gives us. Do we take as much time to tune our bodies as we do our cars. I can say for me that for over 40 years the answer was not really. Only when I had to. We need to take care of ourselves as well as we take care of our material things. Because we are worth more!
