Trip To The Zoo & Weekly Weigh In

Thursday, June 05, 2014

emoticon I love animals, and I could talk all day about the trip to the Zoo... wait, don't leave! emoticon I will try to keep it to the highlights. I will attach a bunch of photos to the bottom of this, so if you are interested in just the goods, feel free to head straight there. emoticon

emoticon A little girl, maybe 5 years old walked up to the meerkat exhibit and started singing the opening lines from "The Circle Of Life", so adorable!

emoticon There were 3, adorable, baby Chimpanzee's! They were so cute to watch, and watching the mommy's interact with their babies was a sight to see.

emoticon The giraffe's were super cute as well.

emoticon There were also nursing babies in the Chacoan Peccary exhibit. It was impossible to get a good pic, because they were blending in with the mommy. And yes, I had to take a picture of the sign to remember what they were called. ;)

emoticon There was a lowland anoa (I will have to find out her name next time) and her sign said she was under veterinary care, she has arthritis in her right knee. When I told her I had arthritis in my knees too, she turned and looked at me.

The not-so-good:
emoticon We sat on a bench to have a snack, and a bird crapped on my head for the first time in my life. It was funny. I didn't even realize it was on my head at first, because it spattered onto my hand and leg. I swear the bird laughed about it, and stood around as I cleaned myself off. Then when I finally went to take his picture he flew off. Too funny!

emoticon The lions and tiger were sleeping, and the black bear was hiding, but I have to say I don't blame them.

emoticon I made the mistake of reading why the elephant at the zoo (Billy) was bobbing his head, and it was not a good result. I now feel so bad for that elephant. It is one of those things where "once you know, you can't not know" and I wish now that I hadn't googled about that. I will continue to go to the Zoo, because whether I go or not, he will still be there (poor guy), but I will definitely be viewing him differently now that I am more educated on the issue. Here's Billy and I:

Overall I had a great time, and we walked 4.5 miles according to my fitbit! Not only that, but I had to walk Sparky later that night and we went 1.5 miles, so 6 miles total. Here is the OUTSTANDING news: I woke up this morning and my knees are not only feeling fine, the swelling I had the last two days has gone away. What?! Maybe the activity and getting stronger is helping me to combat the flareups. I did not ride my bike yesterday because if I did end up with swollen painful knees today, I wanted to be able to know it was from the walking and not from the bike. Today I will get on my bike and just work on short sessions a couple times a day until I can get stronger.

My weigh in was also today, and I know everyone hates when we say we ONLY lost a pound. I know a pound is great, and it makes me happy that I am moving in the right direction. I just felt that I deserved a little more this week. But I did lose 4 pounds last week, so I know I can't complain. To reach my Disneyland goal I need to average 1.4 pounds a week, so hopefully I can hit it. I will be devastated if I can't reach it for some reason.

Since restarting on the 19th of May, I am 16/17 for the good days, which means my rubber band ball has 16 rubber bands and is growing! :)

emoticon for stopping by my blog. The support means more to me than you all will ever know! emoticon

Once again your are inspiring! I just had one of those photo phreak-outs - where I thought I didn't look like I had lost any weight at all, let alone almost 40 pounds. Your blog today reminded that I DID lose that weight and to remember all the good things about it, including typical Misses sizes. Thanks for sharing. You speak to all of us. emoticon

What a fun day - thank you for sharing!

I won't be googling head bobbing either... I feel bad just from what you wrote. I'm one of those people that has love/hate feelings about zoos and other events that involve animals. The good ones do a fine job and offer people an opportunity to see and appreciate wildlife they would never have otherwise.

I loved the pictures too. And while I might be able to guess why the elephant is bobbing it's head ... I am not going to go find out... yet. Do I see an activist in the making?

You look simply fabulous in those photos. So glad your dad took some pictures. and the news about your knees? Whoopee!

you are one fabulous lady. Hugs and thanks for the virtual trip.

Congrats on your weight loss! You got some great pictures.

I was laughing at your blog as my husband went by. Now he's looking up why elephants bob their heads. Oh, gee. He had to tell me. Give Billy a hug next time you see him.

Your pictures were lovely, and I'm glad you had a good day at the zoo with your father. I especially liked the picture of the zebra because of the way the light was hitting his stripes.

I live near Toronto, and after years of discussion, and primarily because of Bob Barker's intervention, our elephants were moved to an elephant sanctuary in California. I hope that your zoo soon releases its elephants to a sanctuary as well.

I know it was "only a pound", but you're doing great. Weight loss isn't easy, and it doesn't come off as steadily as we want it to, but keep at it and you will be at Disneyland before you know it.

    Hugs, Gail

Thanks for sharing your day at the zoo! You look fantastic, and I'm glad that the walking didn't hurt your knees.

Congratulations on the 1 pound loss! I am holding my breath on the Disneyland challenge. I am sure that you can do it, but it worries me that it's based on something not totally in your control. You are working so hard, and I don't want to see you devastated.

    I loved all the photos!

If ever you get the chance to go to the San Diego Zoo, please don't miss it. It's the kind of place an animal love like you (and me) never wants to leave.

    Sorry about the bird!

Okay, about the weigh in, you already know this by heart, no doubt, but I'm going there anyway:

If you were running a fever, you’d take your temperature and use the number to decide whether to grab an over-the-counter med, call a doctor or head straight for the ER. The scale number is the same sort of guide: do I need to continue doing what I’m doing, make a few minor adjustments, or drastically alter my approach? It’s an informational tool, just like your thermometer.

That is, the number is what it should be, given what you ate within the last 24 hours, how much energy you expended in the past 48-72 hours, your current fluid retention and other biological influences.

So it doesn’t matter what you weigh today, because what the scale says this one day is too iffy to be life-defining.

But what you do about the number you see today IS.

For me personally, the most important thing I ever learned from weighing in is that the number really isn’t a very good excuse to throw up my hands and quit.

    How about you?

I love elephants..they are my favorite I will not be googling why his head is bobbing because I'm assuming its not good and therefore I would get mad and boycott the Zoo and go all activist and I really am too tired haha! Great pictures though! The Zoo is always a fun place to visit and seeing the animals is so fun. Great job on your weigh in! You've lost 5 pounds since getting back on track and that's awesome! Keep up the great work! emoticon

    WTG on "only" a pound!

I loved your zoo blog - there is nothing like the zoo to bring out the kid in us! I am NOT going to google bobbing heads - if you wish you didn't know I will continue in blissful ignorance LOL. GREAT news on your knees - and I think you may be onto something about the movement - I think movement HELPS my knees. I know on long road trips (the trip to Texas which we do a couple of times a year is about 14 hours) my knees are always hurting well before the end of the trip but once we get there and are moving around they are fine. And while I was recovering from the knee surgery on my LEFT knee (so not walking for a few days) my right knee began aching. And it went away as soon as I got back to walking. Just sayin'..... LOVE the pictures!! And you are looking great (only next time SMILE bigger!!) emoticon

The Cleveland Zoo spent a ton of money to greatly expand the Elephant exhibit, even getting rid of other animals to make more space. Done partly under pressure and zoo association specifications.

If you're concerned about it it might be worth a google search and a letter to the zoo, or newspaper, or social medial post, etc.

Great photos! My legs are tired just thinking of walking around an entire zoo! Not sure if that's good or bad for me though:)

    Have a great day!

I just Googled why elephants bob their heads emoticon

Those are some great pics, adorable chimps with mama. Way to Go on walking all those miles, almost a 10 K race in total yesterday and your body rewarding you with no pain this morning.

I know you will make good use of that pass, and which bird you will avoid in the future LOL!
