Memorial Day 2014

Monday, May 26, 2014

Today I honor all those who lost their lives in the service of our country, as well as those who lost their youth, their innocence, and are carrying the physical and mental scars of their service. Last night I watched the PBS Memorial Day show, which always moves me to tears. I got an added bonus though, because my nephew's fiancé is one of the Navy Sea Chanters, and I got a glimpse of her on-stage.

My father, my grandfather, my uncles, my cousins - most have served. One uncle served in WW2, Korea and Vietnam as a Navy Medic attached to the Marines. One cousin was a seal in Team 6. I have relatives that served in the army, the air force, and the marines. My DH served in the air force, but fortunately he was not sent to Viet Nam.

Yes, this afternoon I will get into my pool, and we will grill something for dinner tonight. But though it all, remember those we honor today.

So VERY emoticon My grandfather was in World War I, My Uncle was a Marine in World War II, My Dad was in the Navy in World War II and was then called back to serve in Korea. My brother-in-law was a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam and my nephew served two tours in Iraq. Memorial Day always meant honoring our Veterans no matter where or when they served and also honoring their families. There was an excellent show on PBS Monday night called Hallowed Ground and it featured the cemetaries in the various European countries where our service men and women died and where their families chose to have them buried. The cemetaries were so beautiful and so well maintained. They serve as a constant reminder to the citizens of these countries of how much America gave so that they could be free. emoticon
