About a month ago I noticed a black Lab on our property. Didn't pay much attention to her, just another stray passing through. Well last week I heard howling coming from the woods behind our house. Last Saturday I saw the Lab with about seven puppies trailing behind her. They were adorable! However, most of this week we've been seeing the puppies without their mom. My stepdad told me that he saw her and it looked like her tail was broken. Oh no! We figured that she had been probably been hit by a car. We live very close to a major highway, so this happens to a lot pets and wildlife. Those poor pups without a mom, I thought.
We don't live in an area with animal control so we have no idea what to do. They are very timid and won't let anyone get near them. So we can't catch them and take them to a shelter. My stepdad said not to feed them hoping that they'll move on. But hearing their howls and yelps just melted my mom' s and my heart. So I bought a bag of puppy food and have been leaving some behind our storage house.
Today,Saturday, since my stepdad was home all day working in the yard and grilling, I couldn't sneak outside to feed them. They started crying out later on in the day. So my mom had to come up with something before nightfall. So luckily she had bought a lottery ticket and needed to cash it in. This was an excuse to send my stepdad to the store! Plus he was also running low on cigarettes. He pulled out of the driveway, I waited until I heard him accelerate on the highway then I quickly made my way behind the storage house to give them a little food.
This has gotten me outside for the past week adding a few extra steps to my days, so that's a plus.
These pups area the cutest, but I know we can't continue our secret feedings. I fear pretty soon they might turn out to be this pack of wild dogs. Hopefully, I will be able to gain their trust soon, so that we can round them up and get them to a facility so that they can find them a good home.
