May Bike to Work Month

Tuesday, May 06, 2014

It is May Bike to Work Month. I get really excited about this because it is usually the first month I have a chance to dust off the bike after putting it away for the winter. I love riding my bike.

Towards the end of last year the husband switched jobs and so this May Bike to Work Month I knew I was going to need to ride alone (last year he worked near me and we commuted together). Which means looking out for the cars, obstacles and challenges on my own. It seems silly I am sure for those of you that ride alone a lot but I have never ridden without my husband. So it was a scary idea.

Last Saturday we rode our bikes to run all our errands. The husband let me take the lead, let me work on looking out for cars and getting my way through obstacles. It was great and I felt really good. We rode 14 miles and even though I was a little sore, I really could feel the difference in how much more fit my legs are compared to last year.

This morning was the first morning of me commuting the 7 miles to work alone. And I ROCKED IT! We had a mirror installed and it was so easy to keep an eye on the cars around me. My legs were a little stiff, maybe from sitting on Monday but all in all it was a great ride. Can't wait to ride home. And now that I have my confidence, I won't hesitate on riding to work anymore. Sometimes you just need to get the things you are nervous about over with!

So are you pulling out your bike to log miles in May Bike to Work Month?

That is awesome!! I would love to ride my bike to work, and I'm only a few miles away, but it's all very fast, very awkward highway, where there are a lot of car accidents. :( Guess I'll have to settle for riding around town! Enjoy yourself!!
