Dead Last, But Done!

Thursday, May 01, 2014

Tom's been on a running kick lately. There were SEVEN people (!) in my boot camp class that ran the Nike Women's Half Marathon on Sunday, and I guess he decided to continue that streak all this week. Monday, Wednesday, and today were all significant amounts of running. Tuesday probably was, too, but I didn't go. :)

And given that I'm only good for a 5K at best and these people are running freaking half marathons (one girl ran with Shalane Flanagan, the first American woman to finish the Boston Marathon this year, for about three miles before Shalane took off, so these women are FAST!) I was, of course, dead last in every lap this morning.

BUT! I ran the entire way. No intervals. No walking. Just slow, steady running, which was what he was going for anyway. He wanted even paces for everyone. Your first 1/4 mile takes exactly as long as your last 1/4 mile. And I did it! I was pretty darn consistent!

Of course then I was sweating profusely and the second half of the class I think I spent more time trying to get the sweat out of my eyes than actually doing the exercises. Details.

Warm-up lap
1/4 mile 2:25
1/4 mile 2:26
1/2 mile 5:38
1/2 mile 5:40
1/4 mile 2:25
1/4 mile 2:21

Chest press w/band
Wide-arm pushups
Regular pushups
Diamond pushups

Side squats
Military press w/tricep dip

Plank / pushups

I kind of hate you. emoticon

Every time I read your blog I feel like I need to get off my butt and DO SOMETHING. Now, at this point I have not actually gone and done it, but I feel like it's only a matter of time before I feel too guilty to sit on the sidelines anymore.

So yeah, thanks for that. emoticon

Seriously, you rock and I am SO impressed with your dedication and fortitude. I would have crawled home and died the first week.

When I completed a half marathon last year (I can't say "ran" a half marathon; I was nearly crawling by the end), I crossed the finish line and said, "I may be dead last but I'm NOT dead!" I wasn't actually dead last (still haven't figured out who was behind me), but I did get lapped by almost every person doing the 30 mile race that day. Some of them even slowed down and chatted with me. It was embarrassing.

Congrats on making it through what looks to be a tortuous workout!
