Small Things

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

Another thing that I learned from Made to Crave is that big things can be brought down by small things. She gave the example of the plane that Captain Scully piloted with both engines shutdown by geese. The plane was brought down by the small geese and luckily he was able to land in the Hudson River. Our weight loss goals can also be brought down by small things. Maybe we let a negative comment get to us and then we seek consolation with food and then we eat more food. Maybe sneaking a cookie or treat seems innocent but then we crave another and then another. One small thing can snowball into a big thing.

But I would like to think the opposite is true too. Small things can lead to big things in a positive way. Going for small walks at first gradually leads to longer walks. Drinking water instead of soda gradually leads to eliminating soda. Small gradual changes can lead to big results. So start out small and simple but build to something big and spectacular! You know you can!

I agree with you that small things can be both negative and positive. It depends on how you choose and apply those small things. Why let that mean comment derail your healthy lifestyle? Maybe what's needed is a change to the relationship with the commenter. Also, I'm thinking of the relationship of those small things to the big things. If the big picture is positive or negative, that will affect how negative and positive small things pan out.

Very true. I have been on the negative side sneaking treats that snow balled into a bad week. Hoping to make little steps and turn it around.

Love it! We need to be mindful of which direction the small steps are leading us. Thank you!

I think you took the lesson to heart and applied it across your issues - very clever.
