Probiotics / Enzymes / New Eating Choices

What has happened to me these past few years? I've ballooned in my weight. Size 8s and 10s are a thing of the past. And after today's shopping trip, I'm not even a size 14 any more...

On the one hand, I've explained it to myself that it's all due to retirement: Constant traveling to new places, no longer working at an exercise facility, plus too many happy hours. Not just retirement though... I've gone through menopause and lost who knows which hormones that used to be beneficial. And enzymes! My body no longer has the digestive enzymes that covered over a multitude of my poor nutritional choices.

Now I'm beginning to turn my interest towards gut bacteria, and the helpfulness of probiotics, prebiotics and additional enzymes to see if I can get myself out of this overweight mess I've gotten myself into.

While at a thrift store last week, I came across the March 10, 2014 issue of First for Women magazine. An article---Heal Your Gut to Lose Your Belly---was a compelling read!

As one sentence stated: "The key to losing those extra pounds and staying thin for life effortlessly? Changing the nature of bacteria in your GI tract."

I went over that 4-page article with a fine-tooth comb, making notes for myself.

Not only was fiber a big "must," but so was the encouragement to eat foods that were considered probiotics (and/or take probiotic capsules), along with foods that were prebiotics.

Today's grocery shopping list had me adding jars of pickles to my cart; sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, and high fiber cereal. And a box of daily probiotic capsules.

I'm willing to give this different way of eating a shot to see what happens.

I don't want to keep getting bigger!

    Hmm, interesting thoughts...i am in the same boat and it is frustrating. I take meds to suppress hormones too so that might be a huge factor. I have gone down to only 1 yogurt a day. Maybe I should get back to that second one. Let us know if you've seen any difference since it's been over a week for you already.

    Your story mirrors my retirement life too. Let me know how this new approach works for you. Due to my poor eating habits, probiotics still couldn't overcome the sugar in my diet.

    Susy.... so funny .... I too read an article just this week on the gut bacteria !! It does sound very interesting ! I was thinking of starting some capsules myself. I do eat yogurt and some high fiber cereal now. Let me know how it goes !

    Thanks everyone! I'm just on Day 3 and still encouraged. (No noticeable results... yet!)

    Although not every morsel that I eat is something that's a probiotic, it still is helping me to stay conscious of my nutrition (and portions).

    Interesting Susy -- keep us informed as to how it's all working!

    I eat whole grain breads all the time & yogurt often. Funnily enough I find a good night's sleep one of the best things to keep the weight steady; not sure if it's because I skip some of the munchies if I go to bed earlier or if it's the sleep time itself but I notice the difference first thing in the morning when I weigh in. With all my gym time you'd think my weight would be dropping but maybe it's all the heavy muscle I'm building, hahaha!

    Sounds like a good plan! Don't forget all your wonderful fruits and veggies are great fiber! I tend to do the yogurt thing almost daily so it will be interesting to hear how your supplements work. I always chose to get as much as I can from foods first. Best of luck and keep at it. This year was new and I think you learned a lot. It will get better because you will tackle it!

    I am sure you will find something that works!!! Hormones are the necessary evil in our lives that certainly can wreak havoc when they are out of wack!
