Day 13 - Lessons learned. Ouch!

In the last 2 days I have gotten almost a week's worth of steps! (43,536) Today, I hurt!
This weekend's intense activity has helped me get a few nuggets of information through my overly thick skull. First, water exercise is great for cardio and muscle development. Okay, I already knew that, but it really showed in my race this weekend. I am not achy and muscle sore as I have always been in the past when I did a 5K. I even managed to run out of the tunnel and to the 50 yard line/finish line on the field at TCF Bank Stadium without having an asthma attack! And that was after walking the rest of the 5k in 53:25! (I am have really short legs - less than a 20 minute mile is an accomplishment for me when I am just walking! I am built for distance, not speed!)
Second, I realized that although water exercise is great for cardio and muscle development, life takes place on land! Much to my chagrin.
I have painful shins and have been in pain since Saturday. My shins have always been a bit of a problem, and are always sore after I have done races, but not like this and not when the rest of me feels pretty good. About a month ago, I decided let myself do all my exercise basically in the water since I love it and to not push myself to walk and run, etc. I thought, what could it hurt! Well, I found out this weekend. Although I am stronger and healthier than I was a month ago, I have neglected a part of my health.
In reflecting on this during the weekend, I realized that I don't want to give up my water exercise, but I need to add some land training too. My next race is July 19th. That gives me plenty of time to get in land shape for a 5k. So tonight after work we start small. I am not swimming tonight (Doctor appointment), but I can go for a walk when I get home. I am going to walk this week and start the Rookie Running program if I feel ready next week. Slow and steady.
Every day is a new lesson on this journey. Happy Monday!
