Humbled and Humiliated at the DMV

Thursday, April 03, 2014

Badly in need of a haircut, today was the day I decided to get my hair styled and then head to the DMV to update my driver's license. The stylists, clients and I all shared lots of laughter and conversation during my stay and I left feeling much better about myself than when I'd entered. After my photo and while my license was being processed a very familiar looking older man walked into the tag agency. I stood about 2.5 feet from him. I was sure I knew him. When he spoke to the clerk saying he needed a new tag for his motorcycle, I was SURE that was who I thought it was. My ex-husband. We were married 8 yrs...and divorced 28 yrs ago. I said, "Dwan, you still ride motorcycles after your terrible accident?" I said it in a friendly manner as that is how I was feeling. Momentarily I'd forgotten about how much weight I had gained. (About 125lbs). He looked straight at me and said, "Now, who are you? I've forgotten." {He hadn't even recognized my voice.} I said my name. He repeated it with a sort of nervous laugh and his attention was returned to the clerk that was speaking to him. I walked quickly out of the building and started driving down the road and realized I was driving without a driver's license! I rec'd a call from the tag agency and I explained I would be waiting until that customer left. The lady was very receptive and just said, "Okay, I'll see you shortly." I cowardly hid and waited until he had left on his big red motorcycle before I returned inside the bldg. to finish my transaction.
Thank goodness for my siblings, niece and best friend. I had to tell this story to each for their reaction and still haven't processed my feelings.

I read on the thread about the 3 item to do list that you were going for a haircut so I wandered over to see if you blogged about the new haircut.
I'm so sorry the rest of your day brought you this strange / bitter experience. You don't know of course if he did not recognize you because of the weight. Maybe he is having memory problems / brain issues, maybe he was totally caught off guard, we just don't know. I hope you'll regroup.

That's his problem not yours. You were well rid if him . . Don't let it upset you. You have a good memory he doesn't . Irene
