40 Miles today (2014- Blog #74)

Sunday, March 16, 2014

emoticon What a good day for riding. Everyone seemed to have had the same idea today. The great weather brought people out for walking, running and biking. I rode about 40+ miles - .. and most of if was dotted with cherry blossoms, magnolia trees and lots and lots of green! The birds, geese and squirrels added to the refreshing spring day.

Each year, my winter break from riding seems shorter because I am riding later into the winter and earlier in the spring. This year I rode many times in the cold and wet so today's long ride did not feel horrendously out of my league. Also, since I joined the gym and kept up my walking and running, today's ride felt pretty comfortable and doable. The worst is that my rear is not as "conditioned" for a long ride, but the legs and the rest of my body were compliant. in fact it felt good to be out and pushing myself. Got home and was full of healthy energy.

emoticon Tomorrow is our 8K Shamrock Run. Will be up early to get ready. It's the first formal running event for the year. Going to meet up with a few friends this year. Well, we will attempt to find each other. That is way easier said than done given the thickness of the crowds that show up.

emoticon OH! Two quick updates...
1) A friend and I will be joining forces in June to do our first joint duathlon. We decided last night to do the Olympic length which is a 5K run, 50 mile ride, and 10 K run. Most likely I will just do the ride. She will do the 5K and 10K. That's cool since I have a packed May/June/July/August with runs and rides.

2) I am not going to be able to do my half marathon in June which I have been running for the past three years in honor of my mom ... for a super awesome reason! My daughter is graduating with her masters in Bilingual Speech Pathology at the same exact time as the half marathon. It's a no brainer :) and I could not be more proud.

Hope your spring is inching in too :)

Hello, how are you? I was wandering around spark and saw you are a friend of MWWENSIN, who just ran a half-marathon, so was on the Galloway team list of member races. And thought I would stop by your page to see how you are. Well this blog says you planned a relay duathlon in June. How did that go?
I am planning a relay triathlon next March, I think it will be lots of fun. I did my first triathlon this March 2014, a short one with pool length swimming, so no wet suit required. Also, I see you went on a trip to Europe, and am going to read over those blogs next.
Hope all is well with you!!
And I enjoyed seeing the Rainier photos again.
My DS is living and working in Seattle since August 2014 and I am amazed we can see Rainier from Seattle!! After passing by Baker on the way down.

Congratulations to your daughter on her academic success !!
Bilingual speech pathology, English and which other language?

I made a similar trade one year-- to be with someone on a special day instead of running a race I had done for years-- and never regretted it. You can always run the miles, and resume the race next year.
What an amazing accomplishment for your daughter!

Definitely super emoticon on all fronts!
Glad you've stayed in shape and are loving the weather as a result.

    Congratulations to your daughter!

Have a great time at your race. May you have mild weather and find your friends.

I have yet to get outside for anything more than a walk. Still too much ice for my liking. I yearn for spring. I am envious of my Spark friends who live in milder climates.

Looking forward to your race report.

I cannot think of a better reason to forego the triathlon... and I know your mom would agree!

I really identified with the description of your ride yesterday, and self-assessment of how ready you are for the season ahead. I was finding my "Spring fitness level" a little down from last year's seasonal high... even though I've been doing MORE cycling over the Winter, it's the sport of the three in TRI that I most often neglect, so yesterday, having taken Brenda "off" the trainer and taking her out on the familiar trails felt great... but I could tell I have work to do to get to the level I need to be.

Here, too, it was a great day to ride... although I have to say I'm jealous of your cherry blossoms, for although it was warm and sunny here, it is still pretty sparse and brown in terms of the flora of the area. And this morning? Snow! How rude!

Hope you have a great run today! Spark on! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yes, the daughter's graduation trumps the tri for sure. It isn't as though you haven't done it before. I'm sure your mom will be there in spirit with you.

    You had a wonderful day.

WTG, good luck for the 8k Diane

Good that you'll have company for the duathlon, I think we can forgive you not doing the half marathon for such a special occasion LOL. emoticon to her, fantastic!!
