May 2012 to March 2014 Knee recovery

The time has come for me to write an update blog again......I have waited and waited on the waiting list for an operation on my knee for a displaced knee cap here in the UK. I injured my knee in May 2012 and have waited on a list until December 2014 when finally the operation went ahead. I had physiotherapy for a few weeks before the op and then up until now (March 2014) after the op. I can now say that I am so pleased with the results and I can once again move my knee. If you have read my blogs previous to this you will see it left me very down.
A few years ago, I started running and lost a lot of weight doing it, I discovered it was a wonderful way to keep fit, and lose weight, but also get out into the fresh air and meet people, and I felt so good about myself for the first time in decades. But an injury to my knee stopped everything and I was devastated. I was concerned that my weight would come back on so quickly and all my effort would have been for nothing, but luckily I have only put on 10 pounds. Yesterday was my first bike ride and it was so enjoyable I almost cried.
Before the op over the last year or so, I had been trying to do other forms of exercise without using my knees but it had been difficult to find something that would not hurt and I ended up hurting my other knee and found most activities difficult. On top of that I ended up getting an immune illness that left me completely bed ridden for several months. I had only just fully recovered from that when one month later I received the letter to say that I could have my knee operation. Thank goodness I was well enough at that stage to have the operation.
I think that 2014 is going to be a good year for me and I am pound by pound losing the weight gain, but very slowly. I am in my early 50,s so I suppose that my body is a bit more fragile, but I am going to try my hardest to get back into enjoying my life again.
