"Do just once what others say you can't do, and you will never pay attention to their limitations again."
James R. Cook

This quote got me thinking today.. taking a look back on four years ago (WOW! Time is a movin')

There have been so many benefits of deciding to get healthy through better food habits and more exercise. One prime benefit was when I decided that I could do my first triathlon at age 51. Why? Because I thought I could not. No one else said i could not, but society has been slow to accept older people doing way cool stuff like triathlons. But my biggest obstacle - or nay-sayer - was me. I have not been like that in many areas of my life. I am stubbornly adventurous and nothing really stops me, BUT, when it came to things like a sport that seemed to be for "younger" people, I did not jump and say PICK ME! PICK ME!

Fortunately, I am also competitive by nature and I decided to take myself to task and train for my first TRI. My time frame was pretty condensed (about 6 months) and I did not leave much room for backing out of the challenge. It was a tough time in my life and the focus needed to succeed in the TRI was enough to keep me mentally healthy as all as physically more healthy.

What I learned during the time and at the first TRI was that I was wrong about two big things. First, society was not excluding older people from great events like triathlons. In fact, the support my my first TRI for first timers of all ages was respectful and inspiring. The cheering for every single person made me realize that the ONLY barrier to "old" people (ME) doing these cool events was my own mental block. That leads me to my second lesson: I really can do what I put my mind to. I knew this from a work standpoint. I did not know this from a personal standpoint.

REFLECTIVE MOMENT: Jumping up and down saying PICK ME PICK ME is a great way to enjoy being 55!

Have a POSSIBLE Friday!

Older people at 51? Please! Really? 50 is the new 40! Sorry, just had to rib a little.

Anniversaries are a great time for reflecting on how far we come. First month, three months, one year, 4 years. Congratulations! You are a strong 50-some.

Empowering yourself for your 60s and 70s.

Is a emoticon in order? You *do* know that YOU doing your first TRI at 51, led to ME doing my first at 59? You are so right... the fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves, Brutus!

Don't you LOVE your new life? emoticon emoticon emoticon

What makes one feel old? Lack of involvement in life I'd say is one issue. Another is being weighed down with life itself.

I don't think you will ever be old, neither will I.

    I enjoyed you blog.
I don't feel "old", I feel experienced. I probably will never do a Tri, a full marathon or an HM but I will and can show the world how strong and fit we "experienced" women can be. I turn 60 next month and will continue to be more fit and lively than ever!

One of the things that brought me to SP was that I was thinking myself into being old. I feel younger now that I'm slimmer and fitter.

Good for you for building your faith in yourself.

I love the quote. You are right just do it. I will be 70 this year and my goal is a walk run
one of the small ones that is not a race. I have bone on bone knees so I have to be mindful of what I do. I will do it. Look out youngsters we are on the move. emoticon
