Streaking for Water! (2014 - Blog # 64)

Thursday, March 06, 2014

Sorry, I could not resist being a bit cheeky :) But seriously, at work we have started a streak!

A bit of background... At work I do not speak much of a healthy journey. As a supervisor it seems inappropriate to do so. I do hope that my behavior/habits speak for me. Folks know that I run, walk, bike, etc. And they also know that I struggle with having to drink water. Back in January, I spoke to one person on the team because it was a natural conversation that led to me talking about water and SparkPeople. We talked about how streaks are so motivating.

Since then a few cool things have happened. First, the staff really makes sure we all eat at lunch. Soooo hard to do in our job as our schedules are not predictable and we are always traveling to different schools. But they decided that my office was the best place to eat lunch (I wanted them there!) and so whoever is around at lunch time (ish), we eat together. First time in my entire career as an educator that I have eaten lunch pretty much every day (for that last 4 months) ... first time in 35+ years!!! I have just never made it a priority. This staff, however, won't let me forget and wow.. does it make a difference on so many levels!

Second, we all decided (ok.. I cajoled and they came along) to join the district HealthyU program. This will start shortly. I am looking forward to that. In the meantime, one staff person has decide to lead us in high energy movement a few times a week.

Third... so where is the streak?? Well, the staff person who heard me talk about Spark and Streaks has been challenging us all to drink more water. She has a few of the team aiming for 102 or 112 ounces of water per day. Ok.. I do not think I will hit that amount of water, but I will be shooting for my 64 ounces per day. She is starting up a WATER WALL where we will all be tracking our water streaks. Is that not cool?!?! A very supportive and energizing group.

Now we see the entire team of 9 walking around sipping big ol' water bottles. The reminders are all around me so I really can't play the "I forgot card".

Have a water-"logged" day!

Most of my friends happen to be educators, and I am not one of them, but in spirit I am. It takes an educator to put it on the WALL! I love it! It is wonderful for you to have such a supportive environment. Pass it forward! The kids will notice too!

    Kudos to all emoticon

Great to read how you are quietly influencing the health of others for the better. Keep drinking your water. WTG!

when we're at our AZ house it's easy for me to drink my 6 to 8 cups of water (sometimes more) but when we're in OR, it's harder for me to keep that streak going ~ this year will be different though as I'm very focused on staying hydrated.

how awesome that your leadership is in what you DO & not so much in what you say. and the truly fabulous thing is the power of a simple conversation and the real life actions that can arise from it

glad to see that your fellow staffers are on board and that each of you challenges /helps the others!

You never know when one of those "casual conversations" will result in a healthy spark for others. Even ONE other life changed does make a difference.

Since I'm a team lead at work, I try to be sensitive to the needs of all. Not appropriate to force my own habits / views on others, but also not let any habits of the "floor as a whole" derail me. Still, ONE voice being brave and bringing in a healthier option to a food day tends to bring out the "me, too" in a group.

ONE voice taking her break as a walk tends to lead to seeing familiar faces while out walking.

This year, after dithering with myself, and carefully polling the team, I made our "required" status meeting (all team leads must hold a team meeting at least once a month)... a weekly informal walking meeting. Tried it for a month (February), and at the end of the month... they voted to continue the practice for the next two months. We get needed communicating done, and are not sitting!

There have been studies that show this works, and so far, so fair. A lot depends on the nature of the meeting... some meetings are not suited to doing this way, and we don't do THEM on the go.

Still, a healthy workplace is a great thing! emoticon

That is so cool! You are indeed changing others in the best way possible: being a great example. Now they are helping you. How wonderful is that??

I have just upped my fluids, I drink 3 liters a day, that is 12 x 250 ml cups. I include tea and herb teas in my count but not coffee or juices.
I give myself a head start by downing 700 mls in bed before I get up each day, and take it from there. And before I have a cup of tea, I drink a glass of water.

It is quite hard to remember to drink water especially if it is cold outside. So I have mine hot sometimes, and with a little sliced ginger for flavoring.

And in summer, I use a soda stream to make a carbonated drink, soda water to which I add a dash of vanilla essence and some stevia. No calories, it tastes fantastic especially with a twist, and it looks like an adult beverage, so it is great for parties!

Maybe you will like it too?

The employees where I work are supportive for those who want to lose weight. They walk together. They have been helping me with my 90 day compliance streak. It feels good to be around that.

I seem to remember you got some team motivation going a while back ( can't remember the details, getting people signed up for something or other?) so you are still sparking others to better health without preaching it. emoticon emoticon
