I Played Basketball!!!!

Friday, February 28, 2014

I've always been one of the guys. Always.

Before last night's basketball practice the coach of our 8 year old boys asked parents to come ready to play if we were interested in "scrimmaging" the boys just for a fun last practice. Per usual, I was the only female (besides two of the three coaches!!) who was dressed to play, with seven of the dads ready to play.

Basketball is (was) my sport. I really was good at it. I can't play volleyball worth a darn, softball pretty much the same. But I am (was) an athlete. So if there was a basketball court, I was trying to get on it when it was dominated by boys. It was the sport all the kids in the neighborhood came to play at my house, partly because my dad usually played with us, and Dad had even installed lights so we could play late into summer nights!
I was afraid to play last night because practice is held in an old school "gym" (aka school floor tiles painted with court lines) and the boys are always sliding all over. Plus, even though I've been vigorously exercising for two months now, I wasn't really sure about all the sprinting. But I got in the game.

I was surprisingly in shape enough to run up and down the court! And I scored the first bucket for the team where I heard the other adults cheer, and it gave me a boost as if I was back in high school. I felt like an athlete again! GLORIOUS!!!!
Later on one of the dads asked me to sub for him, telling me to get back in the game and score some points. That made me laugh - having the confidence of the others that I really knew how to play. If they learned anything, it was "Don't judge a book by its cover." You never know when a woman who is 47 lbs overweight might be able to show you a thing or two on the basketball court.
I'm such a big talker. You know, I was playing against EIGHT YEAR OLD BOYS. But it sure felt good to run the court with them, make my son laugh, and have a few people say to others "She has a good shot!"
This goes down as my most recent NonScaleVictory!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!!

Thanks for allowing me to celebrate it with you!!!

Peace Out,
