Bad news about mom

Friday, February 28, 2014

I went to work today. My mom is a patient on my floor. I helped her get set up for breakfast then I left to take care of my patients. Her Dr stopped me in the hall before I saw my first patient. He told me that my mom has metastatic liver cancer. She had breast cancer 14 years ago but we thought it was over. He recommended hospice for her. I cried right there in the hallway. My nurse manager was very nice and found another nurse to take my patients. I spent the day with my mom but I haven't told her. I'm not sure if she would understand anyway. I called in for work tomorrow. I wanted to go to her room so I could talk to her Dr again about how far advanced it is, prognosis etc. I also wanted to tell my daughters, two of them are at friends and won't be home until tomorrow. I feel guilty about calling in but I also don't feel able to carry on as usual yet. emoticon
