More than a few gears (2014- Blog #51)

"Life is like a ten speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use."
Charles Schultz

I have a pretty nice bike- a racing bike with many gears. I decided to take a few workshops at my local bike store to learn about flats, basic care and shifting. It was very enlightening to hear more about gear shifting. Biggest lesson: What I thought I knew I had to unlearn. I had made riding a bike a very hard job and had not learned to use the gears to my advantage.

Before I really got going on my healthy journey, I lived most of my "healthy living" in one or two gears, not ever really understanding my own capacity to switch gears and not ever really know which gear to be in to help me out them most. When I started with Spark though, I learned that what I knew I had to unlearn. There really has not been a day on spark where I did not learn something new.

It really surprised me when I learned that healthy living has more than a 2 or 3 gears:
emoticon Gear #1 - Fruit juices are NOT a good idea! Keeping most of my foods closest to the original form is a very effective way for me to keep my weight in a healthy range.
emoticon Gear #2 - Breakfast every day is important in kick starting my metabolism.
emoticon Gear #3 - More meals per day rather than skipping meals is key to losing and maintaining my weight. This was not intuitive for me, and I need to remind myself of this every day.
emoticon Gear #4 - Protein helps curb my hunger pangs. In fact, proteins make my hunger pangs go away.
emoticon Gear #5 - Building muscle helps in weight loss. Who knew!
emoticon Gear #6 - Ten minutes of a well-designed exercise MAKES a difference. It is a gateway habit to healthy living.
emoticon Gear #7 - My age is NOT a factor in what I am capable of achieving.
emoticon Gear #8 - My weight does fluctuate throughout the day. It's normal!
emoticon Gear #9 - Drinking water is necessary for feeling good and for losing weight - every day. And it is still hard for me, one of the hardest gears to get used to!
emoticon Gear #10 - My age is NOT a factor in what I am capable of achieving.

Those are just a few but ones that linger and affect my use of gears every day. What gears have you learned to use?
