First Run of 2014

Thursday, February 20, 2014

Yep. I went out for my first run of the year last night. I had to take advantage of the nice evening. I'm glad I did; it's thundersnowing today.

A nice byproduct of going out for the run was that I actually hit my step goal for the day. I never hit my step goal anymore unless I do laps around my kitchen. When it's nice out, I usually hit my step goal without trying. In the winter, I rarely hit my step goal, even when I'm trying.

Last night's run was wimpy, and I still had to do kitchen laps to hit the step goal afterward. I think it worked out to just over 2 miles. I walked for 10 minutes and then did 10 intervals of walking for a minute and running for 15 seconds. And the last 10 minutes were free form run where I'm supposed to run as much as I'm comfortable with. I may have run half of it in pretty short bursts.

The important takeaway: I'm incredibly out of shape. Which I'm okay with. That just means that once I'm consistent with it, I will see big improvements in relatively short periods of time. That wil help me stay focused.

I think the blogging is helping. I'm going to try to stick with it. If I tell myself I have to write something every day, that gives me a little push to do something worth writing about every day.

Tonight is Game Night - which is one of my favorite nights of the week. The weather is much nastier so I'll need to do something inside. Maybe I can get some strength training in before I go out. That's my goal. Squats, pushups, planks and some other random stuff. I've got a ton of ideas. Just need to figure out a workout. That I can do at home. Without a bunch of equipment. And takes no longer than half an hour. I think half an hour is plenty of time to do some damage. At least for starters. And if I want to hit my step goal, I should plan on some kitchen laps or basement laps. Basement laps are better. They're bigger.

I hope I have something good to report tomorrow.
